England

I was kind of heartbroken - and definitely about the racist abuse heaped on the young players who missed their penalty shots - but then I changed my perspective.

Italy after all did suffer horrifically in the pandemic. Perhaps they needed this win more than England.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Not sure about 'heaped' - certainly once is one times too many, but even among my much-too-conservative-for-my-liking family on Facebook, I've seen nothing of this sort. With the foghorn of the internet, it just takes a few idiots / scumbags /arseholes / whatever to have this attitude, and it looks like a lot. I don't think it's prevalent.

I thought the game was boring: not enough panache or flair and what little there was, came from the guys in blue. I have not been paying attention to the issue of substitutes - when I played (very badly) if you broke your leg you carried on, no subs permitted. Or the team had to continue with 10 guys until you managed to extract an equal injury among your opponents. Five subs allowed !!!! Bringing on two subs in the 29th minute of extra time just to be penalty takers (they have to be on the field at the final whistle to be used for penalties) was daft - they had no feel for the ball and were probably not properly warmed up. They missed.
