This case is complete bullshit unless it is (and I'm pretty sure it is) merely a legal fig-leaf intended to cover the corruption of and collusion with the Justice Department to "settle" the claim -- i.e., allow Trump to loot the Treasury.
The thing about civil litigation is that both liability and damages have to be proved. So first, even if it were true that a "former IRS contractor" had given documents to NYT, is there an actual
privacy right that had been violated? How is there any "right" to privacy of information statutorily required to be shared with the government and its many employees? Even if IRS/Treasury has a policy to maintain "confidentiality," does that create some actual civil privacy right that supports a legal claim against the government, and if so what statute even allows such a claim -- because without a specific statutory exception, the rule is sovereign immunity?
And further, why is the government the target defendant rather than the former contractor'? How are the contractor's acts imputed to the government?
Finally, what is the demonstrable reputational harm caused to serial fraud defendant, failed casino operator and well-known moral cesspool Donald Trump, not to mention his charity-cheating grifter failsons, whose Trump Foundation was ordered permanently dissolved because of all the theft and financial shenanigans? If as Trump claims there was nothing fraudulent or otherwise wrong in the tax filings, how is his "reputation" harmed, rather than improved by showing he (i.e. his accountants) followed the law (at least this one time)? Did anyone ever think the Trumps and their company were actually paying taxes? What business can they show they lost as a result of the disclosure?
Again, this lolsuit is pure trash, and just another angle Trump is working to defraud the government and its taxpayers. I hope all the MAGAs are happy Trump is enriching himself so handsomely while their Social Security and healthcare benefits are slashed.

President Trump is demanding that the Justice Department pay him about $230 million in compensation for the federal investigations into him, according to people familiar with the matter, who added that any settlement might ultimately be approved by senior department officials who defended him or those in his orbit.
The situation has no parallel in American history, as Mr. Trump, a presidential candidate, was pursued by federal law enforcement and eventually won the election, taking over the very government that must now review his claims. It is also the starkest example yet of potential ethical conflicts created by installing the president’s former lawyers atop the Justice Department.
