Savannah Smiles
Savannah Smiles
I'll be boarding a plane bound for Savannah, GA in a few hours.
Attending a sex crimes prosecution training, which while not uplifting, should be very useful.
Any suggestions for what to do/see in my free time? I've never been to Savannah.

A flying cattlecar? You have my sympathies. Personally, I'd drive. Hell...personally, I'd rather hitch-hike.

I'm waiting for security in Great Falls. Got the exit row - WOOT!

Nice flight from GF to Minneapolis/St. Paul - Delta still gives you a free beverage & snack!
Sitting at the gate waiting for next flight, hating cell phones and all the mindless (loud) droning they encourage.

That's gonna be a long flight....
You might want to treat yourself to an upgrade....At the last minute it's not super expensive...

Re: Savannah Smiles
It's jam packed, so no upgrades. I'm too cheap, anyway. Plus, I'm in the exit row - tons of leg room, and I get to save lives in an emergency.
We have several extra pilots on this flight to Atlanta. That's always nice.

I used to do the exit row thing all the time...(until I started doing the upgrade thing....
)
If the captain starts quoting from The Book Of Revelations, or opining on the futility of human existence over the intercom, you might ask one of these other guys to take the controls....

Gah!
I love going new places; I loathe getting there by air travel!!
Roadtripping is ever so much nicer.
If I hate flying from Montana to GA this much, how will I ever tolerate flying to the UK, Oz or Africa?
I really want to see the world; I wish travel could be like it is in Alien - go to sleep in a pod and wake up at the destination.

Sometimes it seems as though one has to cross the line just to figger out where it is
Re: Savannah Smiles
You're assuming you don't have to go through major construction (even worse if you hit it a rush hour. when stuck in a small box for hours looking at the back of the same peoples heads you begin to daydream about having the opportunity to get up and take a restroom break.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: Savannah Smiles
As a veteran road-tripper...that's not usually a problem. This is doubly true with modern technology: many GPS's and all Smartphones I have seen have real-time traffic alerts! Between that and my road atlas...no biggie.

With three weeks' vacation, I don't have time to take the slow boat to China (or Oz).

You live in god's country. Why would you want a vacation to go somewhere's else?bigskygal wrote:With three weeks' vacation, I don't have time to take the slow boat to China (or Oz).

There are many places around the world I would like to see firsthand; in general, however, when it comes to this country I agree with you - I live in a place of unsurpassed beauty that I'm looking forward to exploring for years to come. The only places I have a real desire left to visit in this country are Alaska and Hawaii.
But I'll always be glad to visit coastal New England anytime - that's a roots thing.

A few observations:
Big name hotels sometimes rely too much on prior reputation rather than current quality. When I travel for work, I often think how I'm glad that I'm not footing the bill. I'm actually paying for an extra night here in Savannah so I can spend Friday evening playing; if it wasn't too much hassle to move I'd be bummed I'm paying this much for a bed.
Everything is too expensive. $5 for a bottle of water in the room! Gah!
On the upside, there is a coffee shop in the lobby that serves Starbucks and a terrific crab cake po' boy. Coming from Montana, I'm just pained every time I pay tax on food or merchandise. Gah!
Crab cake is one of my favorite Southern delights; I plan to eat seafood every day that I'm here.
The training is terrific; I've learned several useful things in only half a day.
I'm enjoying the civilized eastern schedule; we start at 9am, get 1 1/2 hours for lunch, and quit at 5pm. This afternoon I'm walking the riverfront. The one thing this hotel has in spades is location; I'm one block from the riverfront.

Re: Savannah Smiles
Get yourself some Gullah/Geechee culture while you're there. Eat some she-crab soup and boiled peanuts. Also, bring home some pralines for everyone.
GAH!
Re: Savannah Smiles
I LOVE going to new places and walking. if I can walk near water, I am even happier.
As for paying high prices? Unless it is attached to some big name foodie, I refuse to do it.
I drink tap water wherever I can unless there is a health reason that I can't.
I go to the local market to pick up (at a poofteenth the cost the hotel wants to charge) anything I want.
Enjoy your time, enjoy your walks.

Re: Savannah Smiles
I spent an hour deciding where to eat tonight - and I'm mad I let myself skip dinner last night after a tiring day traveling! I might have to hit the authentic British pub (that serves curries!) for a very late dessert. Screw it, I'm going home 10lbs heavier.
Tonight I'm having my first ever fried green tomatoes, followed by a low country boil: shrimp, sausage, new potatoes & corn.
When I figure out how to post pics from my iPhone I'll share some.

Let me know what beers the pub serves!

I have a palatability problem...after 25+ years of drinking well water, the overpowering chemical (chlorine) taste of municipal water actually makes me gag.The Hen wrote:I LOVE going to new places and walking. if I can walk near water, I am even happier.
