Beauty pageants are traditionally more about physical attributes than brain power.
And contestants are usually forgiven for not having a strong grasp of numbers or geography.
But today it emerged that Miss Cornwall has been stripped of her crown after organisers discovered she is five years older than she claimed to be - and lives in a different county.
Laura Anness, 27, lost her sash and title after she was found to have entered her age as 22 on the application form for the competition for every one of the last four years.
The Miss Cornwall pageant, which she won earlier this month, is open to women aged between 17 and 24, who live or work in the West Country county.
Unfortunately Miss Anness, an English teacher from Plymouth, Devon, does not meet either requirement.
She has now lost the chance to compete for the title of Miss England and will be replaced by the woman who was awarded second prize.
Miss Anness also loses a 12-month modelling contract and £2,000 worth of prizes.
Organiser Becky Chapman told how the brunette was accidentally found out.
Mrs Chapman said: 'I didn't think she looked older than 24. But when I was cleaning my office, I came across Miss Cornwall entry forms completed by Laura as far back as 2006.
'She had put her age as 22, and again in 2007, in 2008, and in 2010. When I approached Laura about this, she came clean and admitted she'd lied about her age to follow her dream.
'I had to then pay Laura a visit at home and that's when I found out where she lives. For a girl to enter Miss Cornwall, she needs to live, work or study in Cornwall.
'Laura had told me that she lived in Saltash, Cornwall, but she doesn't, she lives in Plymouth, Devon, and has no real connection with Cornwall. It's all rather sad and has never happened before in the contest.'
She continued: 'Laura had no problem with handing the crown and sash back and had not used any of the prizes. We gave each other a hug and she said she was really sorry.
'I feel sorry for her, she'd been entering these contests for years and never won, and now she has finally won she gets her title taken from her.'
Speaking when she won the title beating 22 other entrants, Miss Anness said: 'It was a complete shock to win. I entered the competition back in 2007 and I wasn't expecting to win this time.
'I would really love to get in to fitness modelling, doing work for companies like Adidas. I love the TV show Pineapple Dance Studios, so to do something like that would be amazing.'
Today she said: 'I don't want to say anything. I just want to forget about it.'
Miss Anness has also been a finalist in a Miss Universe competition in 2009 and was placed fourth in a Miss Coventry pageant.
Her profile on the Miss Coventry website reads: 'Ever since I was a little girl I have always dreamed of winning a beauty pageant.
'I would ultimately love to win Miss World and become a top professional model. I would also love to travel the world.'
A new ceremony is due to be held this week to crown runner-up Samantha Orpe, who is 21 and lives in Truro, as the new Miss Cornwall.
A pageant spokesman said:'The recently crowned Miss Cornwall 2010 Laura Anness has been stripped of her title.
'Laura clearly stated on entry to the contest that she was 22. Subsequent checking has revealed her to be 27.
'Therefore the title and place in the Miss England final goes to Samantha Jane Orpe who was the first runner up in Miss Cornwall 2010.'

'Age lie' former Miss Cornwall takes Plymouth title
A teacher stripped of a beauty queen title for lying about her age and where she lived has won another competition in a neighbouring county.
Laura Anness won Miss Cornwall 2010 after claiming to be from Saltash and aged 22 - the upper age limit is 24. She was actually 27 and from Devon.
Ms Anness was stripped of the title, but has now won Miss Plymouth City, which has a higher age limit.
She said she lied about her age to "prove a point".
Ms Anness will now compete in the finals of Miss Great Britain in November.
Discrepancies about her age came to light when it was discovered she had put her age as 22 on entry forms to enter Miss Cornwall in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010.

Laura Anness, 27, won the Miss Plymouth competition this summer and was due to represent the city in the prestigious national beauty pageant in November.
But unbeknown to organisers, the brunette – who described herself as a teacher on her contest profile – once revealed she earned up to £400 a week as a teenage escort.
In September 1999, the then 16-year-old schoolgirl posed topless for a national newspaper to illustrate how she worked in a massage parlour and as an escort. Earlier this year, mother-of-one Miss Anness was stripped of her Miss Cornwall title in the Miss England contest after lying about her age and where she lived. She later entered Miss Great Britain, with its higher upper age limit, and won Miss Plymouth City.
The rules of the Miss Great Britain contest state that entrants must never have posed naked, worked as a topless model, be or have been involved in pornography.
They must also never have been involved in prostitution, illicit or illegal activities, or use illegal drugs.
