What good could be done with $100 million?

Post by Gob »

Sheldon Adelson spent $100M or so failing to elect Romney.
What a piece of shit.

With $100 Million I could purchase a home where Lord Jim lives.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Could've been worse...he could've spent $100M or so successfully electing Romney. ;)

It's his money, he can spend it any way he wants.

Sure he can O-n-W, but it's how he chooses to spend it that I find disgusting.

$100 million could do so much good in the world.

Spent mainly on negative campaign adverts against Obama?

Geez, that sure beats a cure for malaria, or a new cancer vaccine.

Obama commented on this in his speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner the other night: "You've gotta really dislike me to spend that kind of money. I mean, that's Oprah money! You could buy an island and call it "NOBAMA" for that kind of money! Sheldon would've been better off offering me a hundred million dollars to drop out of the race. I probably wouldn't have taken it --- but I'd have thought about it! Michelle would have taken it!"

... another $37M from the Koch brothers -- and Karl Rove still couldn't pull off a win for the best know Morman since Wm. Smith. As it turned out, Rove was fudging the numbers all along to make it seem like the electoral college vote needle was ticking red. I wonder what Rove took home after the election?

If I had a $100M I'd pay off all my medical bills and buy a nice Honda Coupe with the remainder.

Here's a really offensive squandering of money:
India's Richest Man Spent Over $1 Million On Tickets To The Cricket World Cup Final

India's richest man Mukesh Ambani has shelled out $1.12 million dollars for tickets to the ICC World Cup Final between India and Sri Lanka tomorrow, according to the Mumbai Mirror.

The seats located above the pavilion offer some of the best views in the house.

Ambani has reportedly bought up three corporate boxes with about 15-16 seats each, essentially paying about $22,500 for each of his guests.

Ambani's corporate boxes are decked with A/Cs to combat temperatures that are expected to hit 90F during the day. The boxes will be fitted with LCD screens and servers will be at hand bringing them refreshments through the match. The amount however is probably pocket change to Ambani who has a net worth of $27 billion and spent $1 billion on his home in Mumbai last year.

Exactly.

The money was spent on advertising, travel expenses, research, polling, etc. It is fantastic! The WORST thing he could have done was to give it to "charity," where most of it would been consumed by administration and paid money solicitations.

I find it even more nauseating that people gave Our Beloved President a billion or so to re-elect the cynical failure that is his Administration.

Both sides engaged in negative ads.

And why single this guy out for how he spends his money. There are plenty of wealthy people who spend their money in what others might consider "foolish" ways or at least non productive ways.

The money was spent buying people who stay bought. Why do you think Ted Stevens spent > $1.5M each election running essentially unopposed?

It all depends on which charity.
dgs49 wrote:I find it even more nauseating that people gave Our Beloved President a billion or so to re-elect the cynical failure that is his Administration.
Even more nauseating than that is the fact that a perfectly pleasant and competent man--who once might have been called an "Eisenhower Republican", who stands to the right of Margaret Thatcher on the issue of national health care, and who presided over the recovery from the worst Presidential failure in 75 years and succeeded despite the absolute, unconditional opposition (and the explicitly stated intent to cause a failure) of one the two major political parties--is viewed as some sort of radical, un-American socialist and a failure by people like you.

P.S. Money given to the Obama re-election campaign was also, quote, "spent on advertising, travel expenses, research, polling, etc. It is fantastic!" :fu

True.

charitynavigator.com is a good aid. I use it to have a look at organizations we have supported or considered. When I saw that the SFBallet paid Helgi Tomasson >$500,000 /yr we cut our contributions, for one example.

Because as opposed to money spent on advertising, travel, research, etc. which is recirculated, money spent on charity administration and fundraising is, what? Stuffed into a mattress?
