Why you would choose to spend your "Golden Years" in a cold and rainy place...(unlike our intent to spend those years in a warm and sunny place...)

Is completely beyond me...

But to each his own, I guess... :?

I expect to die, but I have no plans to retire. I love my job and see no reason to stop. I need to put away as many acorns as possible for the kids. I expect the economy to go very bad in this country and I need to make it now while I can.
I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

I'm 69 and will probably work till I drop dead...not because I particularly enjoy my work (though it does have its moments every few months) but only because I wouldn't enjoy just barely scrimping by the way I'd have to do if I relied on Social Security. (As for retirement savings...I do have enough money stashed away in an IRA to live comfortably for the rest of my life--provided I die sometime next week.)

That said, I will probably cut back to part-time sometime within the next year, but I'll have to decide just how much income I'll need for just what level of comfort. (The cat has already warned me that I'd better not try eating his cat food, upon risk of a painful, bloody death.) Ideally, if I could work 3 or 4 days a week and take off a couple of months a year to travel, that would be wonderful. But I'll have to wait and see what happens. :shrug

I'm 61; will be 62 in November and plan on working at least until I hit 65 and then claiming my Social Security and whatever else I'm qualified for — I do have twenty-plus years working as a state employee so I have a nice pension to look forward to there as well, provided Walker and the rest of his Republican Mafia doesn't find some way to screw me out of it in the meantime.  I could claim the state pension right now (I could have claimed it any time after I hit 55, actually), but it's just like Social Security.  I could claim that at age 62 as well, but I'll get more per month the longer I wait on it.

I might find some part-time work — day-time bartender at our local Eagles' Club, perhaps? — a couple days a week just to keep myself out of mischief and earn gas money, but if I don't, it's no big deal.

Looks perfect to me Gob, I hate too much sunshine too, I love rain and husband and I are discussing a move to the Pacific northwest when he retires. I can get work anywhere so that not an issue if I want to keep pounding the floor.

Retire? Not really.

You may remember I had a birthday last week. My two pensions from corporate America kick in on May 1st. I had to take them this year per their rules. I plan to wait another year to claim my So So Security. I also plan to continue working as long as I can. I've been self employed for 13 years. When that ceases to be fun, or I die again (permanently) I'll quit. Besides, if I were around the house all day with Mrs Mc and her two dogs, I'd die of boredom before my time.

Mrs Mc retired from corporate America three years ago, and was thoroughly bored for a few months. It was one of those "retire now and get the golden (plated) parachute, retire later and get nylon, or maybe just a paper umbrella for your next drink". Now, or at least through May 20th, she works as a substitute teacher when she feels like it, and can pick the school and class. It's usually two or three days a week. She also trains others to properly train their dogs a couple of evenings a week. There is no pay in that. It's a dog club thing. It all works for her, but probably wouldn't for me.

Paying off our UK mortgage tonight!!!! We will own a little cottage in Cornwall, original building dates back to 1890.
Gone and done it!!!

This little turn about was brought on by our current tenants handing in their notice.

That was a real shame, as we were very fond of them, considering them mates rather than tenants, (blog readers will know of the "India's present debacle" which we cocked up the last time we were back in Cornwall,) but they are now in a position to buy their own place

So we decided to bite the bullet and ask for a "settlement figure" for the house from our lenders.

We found that by sending money from our Aussie savings we could afford to pay off the house, while still having a reasonable financial cushions in Blighty and Aus, so we went for it!

Just as some icing on the cake, I rang the letting agents last night to discuss some practicalities, (we're giving the leaving tenants a week's free stay as a "house warming" gift to them.)

The letting agent tells me that she has relet the place, without a gap in tenancy, after the current people leave, and at an increased monthly rate.

WIN!!!

That's good news. I've been looking for a haven in the West country (i.e. free weeks of staying there and annoying the owners) for future holidays. Guess I only have to wait five years or so? Bags I August 2021 - what's for dinner then?

You'd be welcome Meade, as would most of the board members.

I'll come the day after then.... (thanks). And I see it's only 17 months... so it'll be in the June/July/Aug 2018 according to our schedule. We're trying to get back to South Africa for 9 months each year and just visit the UK/USA when it's winter back there

I don't think I would get bored in retirement. I like making things and have a list of stuff to make from family members that are in the planning stages. Top of the list is, my niece wants a wine rack made out of an old wine barrel. I had made one for one of my sons friends for their wedding and I have the half-barrel left over from that.
Then there is always something to do around the house i.e. re-screen the back door, turn the compost piles, weed the garden......) and the daughters house is an ongoing project. Just finished putting a hole in a wall that goes between the kitchen and living room, where she wants a counter top. Of course it is a load bareing wall so I had to do extra support above the "portal". And she wants an electrical outlet and spotlight in the yard, blah blah blah.......
And I am taking care of things my cousins widow needs done that my cousin was too sick to do/finish the past year. And I will conitnue to do things for her and her daughter as the years progress. Family takes care of family.
After all that, I can just hop on the mc and take a ride.
In the winter I can hop on the snowmobile and ride.
No, I don't think I will be bored.

It's like my older son asked me when my daughter was thinking about buying her house. "Are you sure you're ready to start maintaining ANOTHER house"?

Since her house was new when she bought it six years ago one April 1st, it hasn't been any trouble. Luckily she has a nephew close by to mow the lawn.

My daughter is very good about doing things she can do (lawn/garden/leaves/etc), and is even a quick study for things she doesn't know (laying floors, putting a big-ass hole in the wall, assembling furniture) . By the time I am done doing all she wants/needs done, she will be able to do it herself.

I'm not a handyman like O-n-W, but I have plenty of ambition for my retirement.

I hope to get back into paragliding and rock climbing.

The area we will be living in is rich in neolithic remains, we will also be close enough to Bodmin moors, and Dartmoor, with their antiquities. I hope to use them as a subject for photography projects.

Hen is going to be doing foraging courses, and we hope to develop our range of cooking skills.

We have friends all over the UK who are game to do "house swaps", so we will get to live in and explore their area.

We want to buy a campervan and tour other parts of the UK and Europe.

Of course it will give me more time to work on my music, you lucky things!!

What about the Cornish liberation front and establishing the Celtic league for a united Celtic people? Oh, maybe you don't want to talk about that in public. :)
