I figured it was all over this time...

They were trailing every minute of the game, until the last two minutes...

It was painfull to watch...

They were constantly behind....

With three minutes left to go in the 4th quarter, they're down by seven...

And then, in the final two minutes, they demonstrated why they are the greatest team to ever play the game...

And for the first time they take the lead... :ok

One more time to go to meet the LeBrons... :ok

WHAT A GAME!!!

WHAT A COMEBACK!!!
Image
And my condolences to the Cleveland LeBrons, who I'm sure would have preferred to go for the NBA Championship without having to play the best team to ever to play the game...

I know they'd rather have played the Thunder, but what does Flipper say?

Oklahoma sure did something to the pooch. As I said before, the Cavs either had to play the best team in basketball (under the current rules) or the team that beat the best team in basketball (under the current rules). Neither option was appetizing.

The Pistons of 87-90 would have taken today's Golden State down in 4 straight (and the same for the Cavs). Those were the great days of basketball.

Seven games in sold-out arenas at play-off ticket prices = megabucks for both teams and the league (TV rights).

That's why they have such a ridiculous number of teams making the playoffs...

(And if I recall correctly, not too long ago, the first round was a best of five, not a best of seven...)

I am filled with dubiety.

But I do not believe basketball strategy has been degenerating, athletes becoming slower and less skillful, or that the incentives to strive for the NBA have become less than 30 years ago.

Yes, you are correct. It's the rules (and the refs) that have changed. And although the 3-point play has been around for a long time, I do believe that today it figures more in the strategy. I'm not sure that anyone today (other than Stephen Curry) could match L. Bird in that arena though.

Screw the basketball finals.  I went to the Thursday night home opener of our local college-level minor league team, the La Crosse (WI) 'Loggers'.  Best seat in the house is only $12, they use wooden bats just like in the pros, play a 72-game schedule over a 76-day season, and include some of the best college players in the USA.  Dozens of players have graduated from this league since its inception in 1994 to go on to the majors; Max Scherzer (the 2013 Cy Young winner while playing for the Detroit Tigers and who is currently setting records now with the Washington Nationals), for example, displayed his talents with La Crosse back in 2004 before being called up to the big leagues.

And the home team won the opener, coming back from a 3-0 deficit with FOUR solo home runs in the middle innings and getting a yeoman performance from reliever Zach Kesterson (Duke University) after starter Kevin Flemer got off to a rocky start, giving up a base hit and two walks and hitting the fourth batter (and forcing in a run) before leaving with an arm injury.

God, I love this time of year!!

That would be...two defeats in a row, for the Cleveland LeBrons...

They are now half-way towards their traditional level of "accomplishment":...

(Actually, they've over achieved given their history... 8-) )

Big Deal. Anybody from 87-90 could have beaten these Warriors back then. These guys were all 2 yrs old and younger.

There's clearly only one flag available to the LeBrons:

OK, we're in the middle of the NBA finals — two games down, at least two to go.  Look at this schedule for the remaining games (as well as the games already played):
  • ● Game 1 ... played on 6/2
    ● Game 2 ... played on 6/5
    ● Game 3 ... to be played on 6/8
    ● Game 4 ... to be played on 6/10
    ● Game 5 if needed ... to be played on 6/13
    ● Game 6 if needed ... to be played on 6/16
    ● Game 7 if needed ... to be played on 6/19
My question is:
Why do they need so much time to go through the finals?  Even if Golden State sweeps the finals and it only needs to go four games, it's going to take these guys NINE DAYS to play those games!
And if it runs for a full seven game series, it will not conclude until Thursday the 19th ... which means that since game 1 was played on Thursday the 2nd, they will have consumed 18 days — TWO AND A HALF WEEKS — to play a total of seven games (336 minutes) of basketball.

This is professional sports.  These guys have already played through a full regular season as well as the preliminary games leading up to this final series.  Why do they suddenly need two off-days between games in the Finals?  Are these guys that much of a bunch of candy-asses that they have to rest and recuperate and lick their boo-boos for two days?  Major league and minor league baseball players (even at an unpaid, non-professional level) play a three hour game one night, then climb onto a bus or airplane, travel overnight, and do the same thing the following evening and the evening after that.  Are these ridiculously overpaid tall guys in short pants such delicate little prima donnas that they can't perform for an hour a night and then get up the next day and do it again?

No wonder I think basketball — as it is played these days — is garbage.

They get one rest day between games, except that they provide an extra day off for travel day, both for the players and the entire entourage of media and team officials that travels back and forth (otherwise, it makes no sense to have game 4 on a Friday night and then game 5 on a Monday night when Sunday is generally a much preferable date). Clearly, though the Cavs are not showing it, having the rest day between games generally allows for a better recovery and superior basketball play, and ditto for the extra day for travel. BB, your comparison to the inert game of baseball is inapt -- baseball requires a high degree of skill and very occasional bursts of top effort, but is in no way exhausting (the only thing exhausting about baseball is the travel schedule). In contrast, basketball, like soccer, involves a substantial and exhausting physical effort with the typical player running over 3 miles per game, much of that at a high effort level, combined with numerous jumps and cuts creating much pounding on the leg joints; the typical NBA player puts in more effort in a few trips up and down the court than the typical baseball player puts in an entire game (pitchers excepted, who by the way, pitch once every 5 days, which under your thinking makes them uber-softies).

Hope they get some inspiration back in Cleveland to provide a fight; at least Portland (5th best in the West) made the Warriors work every game and managed to get a win. It may be just a really bad match up for the Cavs, or it may be that the Eastern Conference really is that much inferior.

That may be the case, when you consider the way the OKC Thunder forced the Warriors to have to put on an SF Giants style backs-against-the-wall type comeback to make it to The Finals..

I have to believe that Cleveland has got at least one win in them...I think their best shot is going to come in the next game...

They're likely to be pretty psyched for their first game in front of a hometown crowd, and the Warriors may have something of a concentration let down after winning in such a big blow out...

If the LeBrons don't win the next one, I sure wouldn't put any money on them for game four...
