Barack Obama More Venturous Than Putin and Medvedev
The meeting has taken place despite the Chinese side stern objections.
The US president has been talking to the exiled Tibetan leader for 45 minutes. Obama has informed the Dalai Lama of his “strong determination” to defend human rights in Tibet.
Beijing made the statement, saying that the Obama-Dalai Lama meeting had seriously damaged relations between the two countries.
It’s not the first meeting of the US president with the Dalai Lama. The previous one took place in February 2010 and also caused outrage in the Chinese authorities.
Let us recall that Beijing accuses the exiled Dalai Lama living in India of his striving to achieve separation of Tibet from the PRC. In 1950 Tibet got under control of China after the military victory near Chamdo. In subsequent years native inhabitants of Tibet suffered from genocide acts.
In 1992 the Amnesty International human rights organization called Tibet a “torture lab of the PRC penitentiary system”. Serious concern is caused by keeping hundreds of monks and nuns in prison.
Since 1991 none of the Russian leaders have dared to meet with the Dalai Lama for fear of triggering conflict with the People’s Republic of China.
