It allows all of his goons in the executive branch to end programs that have been in place since Clinton mandated in the 90s that federal agencies make federal resources more accessible to people without English proficiency. Federal law as a whole still prohibits discrimination on the basis of country of origin and language proficiency, but people would have to sue under those laws to seek redress of changes that the executive branch is now permitted to put in place under the English is official language WH directive.Bicycle Bill wrote: ↑Sat Aug 23, 2025 5:25 pmJust because Trumplethinskin made a proclamation from his gold-embellished throne room regarding an official language, does that necessarily make it so? Doesn't the process as outlined in the old "I'm Just a Bill" animation from Schoolhouse Rock have any place in US government any more, or is everything now done on the whims of a mad hat salesman in the Oval Office?

As an example, when I receive any paperwork from my MassHealth connector policy insurance provider there is a sheet included with a statement in a couple dozen languages, and a translation line to call if you need assistance understanding the content of the paperwork which is in English. Massachusetts will keep doing this but federal agencies which have also been doing this won’t have to provide those translators and accessibility aids now and that will hurt a lot of folks who struggle to access benefits for which they are otherwise eligible.
So yeah it kind of sucks and is more than just an ego point on TTS’s fascist scoreboard. I haven’t seen if there has been any legal action lodged against the directive - Blondi’s office issued guidance/permissions to federal agencies as recently as last month giving them parameters to follow in abolishing the language assistance resources.
