I am going to try to fix my sewing machine and try my hand at making face masks. The problem is I don’t know what kind of material to use. My mother bought a lot of fabric and I didn’t have the heart to get rid of it. But what type would be best to use for a mask?

The crud will have to wait for the residual alcohol to probably do its damage first. I use it to sanitize my mask for reuse, but I am not convinced that all of it dissipates. Just because I can’t smell it doesn’t mean it is not there. I don’t advise anyone to do this with alcohol it is a fire hazard.

We have never successfully developed a vaccine for any coronavirus.

Every other coronavirus we have studied (like the ones that cause common cold) only produces a very short term immunity (~3 months) after recovery from infection - then you are vulnerable to reinfection like anyone else.

This is the most virulent bastard to come our way since the H1N1 influenza in 1918 - not yet as deadly but we’ve only just got started, will likely have a couple of years of this killer striking us down.

The only personal account I'm aware of was a friend's grandmother that appeared healthy one day, got sick the next day and died overnight. It's strange that your grandmother got the flu at the parade and then survived until she died four months later.

True, but then from what I have read, there is no reason to think a vaccine could not be created for this--only that it will take time. Vaccine technology has come a long way in even the last 10 years, and work will proceed as many scientists are diligently working on it.

As for virulence, while covid is more virulent/contagious than seasonal flu, it is an order of magnitude less than other diseases such as measles. Not that this is good news necessarily, because it still can be easily spread, but to show that, like with other dieases that are far worse, the spread can be controlled by responsible measures.

Well, when the dust clears there will be a fairly large number dead, for which the dread is justified; it's not easy to maintain a positive outlook either. And sometimes I feel I'm alone in that, especially since it's likely my younger (well she's in her 20s) has likely contracted it (we won't know until we get a test, and with the testing protocols who knows when that will be? She's self isolating as a precaution, but even in a multi bedrooms house this is not easy, and I'm not sure how effective it will be.

The available facts and data coming from those with actual expertise suggests that this is a national and global catastrophe, the likes of which none of have seen in our life times (unless you're north of 102)...

But it's not The Zombie Apocalypse...

We will survive this, and emerge intact as a society on the other side of it, (hopefully somewhat wiser for the experience) and it's not unreasonable to believe that if we are patient and act prudently now, (two factors that appear to be improving) economic recovery should be fairly swift when we get through this as well...

Not in mere weeks of course as some suggest, but in months...

So you’re saying making stuff in the US is not important. China will sell us what we need or what they think we need at the price they think we should pay. We could do incredible things in manufacturing in WWII because we had the manufacturing-based to do it.
