A Piper Cherokee 180 like that was the first plane I soloed. It rented for $12.50 an hour in 1969, fuel and instructor included. When we practiced emergency landing procedures, we didn't actually LAND the plane...
It looks like it had a bumpy landing, eliminating the landing gear.

Very true! I thought attempting the wallets was a bit much - but trying to strip the plane, hey it's finders-keepers

Robin Hood mob mentality? Of course the student and instructor pilot were probably not that well off.
Instructors are often young pilots trying a get enough flight hours to advance to the next step of their license. I don't know how SA is set up, but in the USA the Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) must already have a commercial license requiring a minimum of 250 hours. Then they can charge for rides or instruction. Most of them also have an instrument rating allowing flight into and through areas of low visibility. An Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) requires 1500 hours. Airlines won't hire them without their own specific additional training.
Good landing. They walked away.
Not an excellent landing. The plane can't be used again.
