. . . themselves
City of Cape Town EMS spokesperson Eckardt Winks said [a] light aircraft crash-landed in Luzuko around 18:00.

"A crowd quickly gathered around the plane. The pilot radioed air traffic, calling for urgent assistance, complaining that they were being robbed of their personal belongings, and the aircraft looted.
And then the cops arrived . . .

A Piper Cherokee 180 like that was the first plane I soloed. It rented for $12.50 an hour in 1969, fuel and instructor included. When we practiced emergency landing procedures, we didn't actually LAND the plane...

It looks like it had a bumpy landing, eliminating the landing gear.

Shocking that all those people living comfortably with all the necessities of life readily available would take such advantage.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

 Very true! I thought attempting the wallets was a bit much - but trying to strip the plane, hey it's finders-keepers

Robin Hood mob mentality? Of course the student and instructor pilot were probably not that well off.

Instructors are often young pilots trying a get enough flight hours to advance to the next step of their license. I don't know how SA is set up, but in the USA the Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) must already have a commercial license requiring a minimum of 250 hours. Then they can charge for rides or instruction. Most of them also have an instrument rating allowing flight into and through areas of low visibility. An Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) requires 1500 hours. Airlines won't hire them without their own specific additional training.

Good landing. They walked away.
Not an excellent landing. The plane can't be used again.
