Re: Music recommendations
Turns the 'sweet' Simon and Garfunkel into a raw wail of anguish. Thanks Ray.

It's cack. Fuck knows why it's getting so much sharing. A sad attempt at doing what Johnny Cash did with "Hurt".
JMHO.
JMHO.

Well, I suppose there is your opinion and then those that matter. This is a great cover with a heavy metal spin. Calm down, it's never going to replace S&G's classic. BTW -- I liked Cash's "Hurt" better than Reznor's original.Gob wrote:It's cack. Fuck knows why it's getting so much sharing. A sad attempt at doing what Johnny Cash did with "Hurt".

Regardless, this proves once again that music, like all art, is subjective.

Oh I agree it's subjective, that's why I added the caveat.

Well, we can agree on a couple things; no, it will never replace the S&G version, and Cash did do a much better version of "Hurt" than did Reznor and Nine Inch Nails.RayThom wrote:Calm down, it's never going to replace S&G's classic. Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?
Re: Music recommendations
Reznor and Nine Inch Nails? They are one and the same.
As for better or worse the two versions of Hurt are reflective commentaries on entirely different beasts. One being relatively young and one being Fucking Johnny Cash. It is a testament of the source material that Cash could make what he did out of it while remaining relatively close to it.
What Cash did is what used to be the norm but now is a downright rarity in covers these days: take an already published song and make it your own. Most covers nowadays barely rise above mere tribute.

Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Damn, I find myself in total agreement with Ray.
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Re: Music recommendations
What is the noise about 'covers'?
How many musicians, singers and instrumentalist, have achieved recognition as top-rank artists, from working with 'standards'? I have a huge rack full of cd's with only that kind of stuff. How many 'greats' have done Stardust, Mack The Knife, St. Louis Blues, Caravan, Just a Closer Walk With Thee?
Miles Davis on 'My Funny Valentine' is not a tribute.

And who can ever forget, Jim Ed Brown, gone one year ago today.

Butit was worth it. Got to spend that time with my wife.
But even he cannot save a Leonard Cohen song.

Actually...*hanging curveball gets launched into the upper deck*...Paul Simon liked it.Bicycle Bill wrote:And then there's my opinion, which is the only one that counts.RayThom wrote:Well, I suppose there is your opinion and then those that matter.Gob wrote:It's cack. JMHO.I find it utterly amazing that this singer required something like two dozen backing musicians — I didn't take the time to count them all — including a percussionist performing on tympani to perform a song called "The Sound of Silence". He should get down on his knees and beg for forgiveness from Paul Simon for what they have done to his soft, thought-provoking song.
Metal bands doing ballads are nothing new. Hell, how many had their biggest hits with ballads?!Oh — so this is what passes for 'metal' now.RayThom wrote:This is a great cover with a heavy metal spin.

One for Sue.
A beautiful reimagining of one of my favourite songs.

Thanks, Gob! That was lovely, and it was always my favorite Joy Division song. I suppose you could guess I was a fan of June Tabor back in the Silly Sisters days with Maddy Prior (was a Steeleye Span devotee then -- but who wasn't?).Gob wrote:One for Sue.
