Well, I suppose there is your opinion and then those that matter. This is a great cover with a heavy metal spin. Calm down, it's never going to replace S&G's classic. BTW -- I liked Cash's "Hurt" better than Reznor's original.

Regardless, this proves once again that music, like all art, is subjective.

And then there's my opinion, which is the only one that counts.   I find it utterly amazing that this singer required something like two dozen backing musicians — I didn't take the time to count them all — including a percussionist performing on tympani to perform a song called "The Sound of Silence".  He should get down on his knees and beg for forgiveness from Paul Simon for what they have done to his soft, thought-provoking song.

Well, we can agree on a couple things; no, it will never replace the S&G version, and Cash did do a much better version of "Hurt" than did Reznor and Nine Inch Nails.

As for better or worse the two versions of Hurt are reflective commentaries on entirely different beasts. One being relatively young and one being Fucking Johnny Cash. It is a testament of the source material that Cash could make what he did out of it while remaining relatively close to it.

What Cash did is what used to be the norm but now is a downright rarity in covers these days: take an already published song and make it your own. Most covers nowadays barely rise above mere tribute.

How many musicians, singers and instrumentalist, have achieved recognition as top-rank artists, from working with 'standards'? I have a huge rack full of cd's with only that kind of stuff. How many 'greats' have done Stardust, Mack The Knife, St. Louis Blues, Caravan, Just a Closer Walk With Thee?
