No, that is NOT what I actually said. You're putting words in my mouth.

But regardless, I want to apologize to you and to @W for including you and her in my comment (though I continue to think that the makers of the second video missed the point of the first video...and that the second video is not at all funny).
MajGenl.Meade wrote:What is the anti-black message in #1? It is that blacks with guns are dangerous and therefore the NRA is risking offending all the right wing gun nuts who naturally hate knee-grows.

I completely disagree, which is why I thought the makers of the second video missed the point of the first video. It is satirizing the idea that "blacks with guns are dangerous" and the hypocrisy of those who hold that view. The message is that the most vocal pro-gun voices are those who think blacks with guns are dangerous, and that they hypocritically exclude young black males from the population they want to see more heavily armed.

The problem with satire is that you find out just how badly you overestimated the intelligence of your audience.

Hmmm it would seem you are back to where you started disrespecting and degrading those who who have a different POV.

Hilarious.

Why do so many people believe there has to be an evil motive when someone attempts to be funny?

It's a typical response nowadays. It seems as though some people are so used to looking for an offensive meaning in inoffensive statements that they can no longer tell the difference between humor and an insult.

Like @W in this thread, for example....

The first video was brilliant satire.

I didn't get past the first 45 seconds of the second. It's bewildering to me that anybody could so massively miss the point. :loon

Crackpot, the Swift quote was terrifically on point. :ok

Do I need to point out that the swift attribution was a joke?

Since we so very rarely agree on anything, I should have guessed that you weren't utilizing it correctly.

So you're saying you only agree with the sentiment if it was said by Swift?

No, I agree with the sentiment, which sounds like something Swift would say - so I was fooled if it's a misattribution. However, it also sounds like something Clemens would say - or maybe any other of the number of brilliant satirists in just the western tradition, not to mention all literature..

The video I posted was from "Funny or Die"--so I assume it's supposed to be funny. The way I interpreted it, it was funny. Some of you have found a way to interpret it so that it's not funny. So why should I think that your interpretation is right, and mine is wrong? :shrug

Oh brother...

Like Warner says, let's go to the tape:
Econoline wrote:Wow. That response indicates that Sarah Silverman's video went whooshing W A Y over Zo&Co.'s head.*

They they seem to be vaguely aware that it was supposed to be some sort of joke, but the whole point of the joke seems to have escaped into the stratosphere above them--as did the fact that it was aimed NOT at black people but at the white gun nuts who would probably shit an MRAP if they saw a young black male gun owner demonstrating his "open carry rights" in their local Walmart...

*ETA: Jim's and Bette's heads, too, apparently.
In case you have forgotten, that's you beginning this exchange by asserting that those who didn't agree with your interpretation, had "the whole point" "whooshing" over their heads...

Apparently you see some substantive distinction between saying "went whooshing over your head" and being "completely clueless" (a distinction which frankly is not immediately apparent to me...it must be a very subtle distinction...perhaps you can illuminate it for me) so I wanted to make sure I quoted you precisely....

I think myself, and @W and Meade have all already made our cases for why we believe our interpretation is correct, so I don't really understand why you are asking at this point why we think our interpretation is the correct... :?

Frankly it seems to me that it is you, (and one of your compadres in this debate) who seem to be insisting (adamantly) that your interpretation, and your interpretation alone is the one and only truly acceptable interpretation...

At least for those who didn't have the point go whooshing over their heads...

You seem to absolutely refuse to accept even the possibility that anyone (white or black) could possibly find anything offensive to black people in that video unless they failed to grasp the "brilliant satire" it contains...(and as I said there ain't nothing "brilliant" about that "satire"; the point they think they're making is juvenile, obvious and sophomoric...it's basically intended as jerk-off video for white liberals. )

That is both condescending and insulting.

And Lord Jim is not the definitive interpreter of all things, despite his obvious steadfast belief that he is.

The first video is a joke!

Picture the viewer as a stereotypical southern white conservative NRA member with his confederate flag hanging over his TV. You know.... a racist gun worshiping redneck.

The idea of a black NRA would scare the shit out of them. (ha ha... that's funny)

The second video is a bunch of dudes that don't get the joke and have decided that the black people in it don't think for themselves and are puppets of the white liberal propaganda machine.

Some people will always find ways to be offended...
