I thought you were making a joke when you responded to the OP referring to the future instead of past but now I believe I was wrong.

I think that rubato is being undeservedly shat on here.

I have shat on rubato before, when I thought that he deserved it, but this is not one of those times.

He has been criticized for allegedly failing to grasp the meaning of the word "back". But he explicitly said that he "would go forward".

His response is obviously -- and obviously intended to be -- not an answer to Lord Jim's question.

Neither is mine. (And I said so.)

Maybe ignoring rubato's posting as non-responsive -- or even observing that it is non-responsive -- would have been entirely appropriate. Or maybe addressing it seriously would have led to an interesting conversation. I have no way of knowing.

But shitting all over him appears to me to be more argumentative blood-lust than serious conversation.

He clearly stated that his posting was not a direct answer to Lord Jim's question -- "would go forward" is self-evidently not an answer to "if you could go back" -- so what is all the fuss about?
