Curry for life!

Jammy bastards!
Curry-loving couple given free meals for life by restaurant

An Indian restaurant in Leicester has offered two of its most loyal customers free meals for the rest of their lives.

Bob and Margaret Allen, from Radcliffe-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire, have visited Khyber in Melton Road more than 4,000 times since it opened in 1984.

The restaurant's owner, Dinesh Raval, said he considered the couple "part of the fixtures and fittings".

Mrs Allen said her favourite curry was chicken kashmiri while her husband enjoyed a range of dishes.

The couple first visited the restaurant with work colleagues 28 years ago and have been making the 40-mile round-trip about three times a week since then.

Mr Allen said: "We were the first customers on the first night and we've been here ever since. We've never had a bad meal in all those years.

"It's not just about the food. They make you feel like part of the family. Nobody comes here without getting a good welcome."

Mr Raval said he decided to stop charging the couple after getting to know them over the years.

He said: "It's not just because they've been coming here as customers. They're part of the family now - they've known the children since they were born and remember birthdays and anniversaries.

"They are part of the fixtures and fittings. It's marvellous."

Mr and Mrs Allen said they hoped to keep visiting the restaurant for as long as they were able to make the journey.

Judging by the photo it shouldn't cost him more than a couple of hundred quid for some great publicity...
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

Me too Sean.

Wow! They make a 40 mile round trip three times a week to support this gaff.

I was imagining that takeaway three times a week indicated a certain laziness on their part.
Bah!

I'm jealous too. Not much in the way of good curry in Bloem - have to go to Durban for that.

Interesting that the restaurant is called Khyber.... pretty much covers the entire curry journey from restaurant, over the 20 miles back home and into the porcelain bus shelter

Carry on up the Khyber!

Or in the case of a good curry, "Carry on out the Khyber"

40-mile round-trip about three times a week

Geez, I love Indian food, (we ordered some delivered from a great Indian place during the storms over the weekend; my personal favorite is Lamb Vindaloo ) but I can't imagine making a "40-mile round-trip about three times a week" for any restaurant...(unless they were giving away free lobster)

Of course I'm a suburban boy, so maybe that sort of thing is common in rural environs....

My one way commute to work is 35 miles. 70 miles round trip. If you like the food, 20 miles one way is not bad, barely a gallon of gas depending on the type of car.

Me too on the Indian food. Although I grew up in a rural commuity where you needed to drive 20 minutes just to get a pizza or got to a movie, as an urban girl now, that sort of driving for one thing makes me nuts.

I made the best garam masala-rubbed pork chops on Monday, and it was so easy. I rubbed the chops (bone in) with a commercial garam masala blend that I like, and then seared them off in a pan with some olive oil. When the chops were done, I pulled them out of the pan, added a dollop of butter, and two onions, sliced thinly. I seared them to brown them as well, deglazed the pan with some apple cider and some white wine, then let it reduce down about half or less. Poured the onions over the chops, and voila, fabulous, quick, easy. I sauteed some spinach which I put down on the plate first. Took less than 30 minutes from start to finish and it was so good we practically licked the plates. I think I'm going to roast some salmon with the same spice blend tonight for dinner, and make a quick cucumber raita to eat with it.

Is 6pm good for you?
If I leave now I should be able to make it.
I love a good pork chop, and salmon. If you want, I'll stop upstate and see if I can catch a fresh salmon. I'll catch and clean it, you cook it.
