Yet another school shooting

Post by Guinevere »

This one, in an elementary school in CT, one district over from where my boys go to school --- early reports are 1-2 shooters, principal, one teacher, and one or two EIGHT-YEAR OLDS shot, and the kids possibly killed.

I'm going to throw up.

No guns. For anyone. We have police to protect us. We have the finest military in the world. We have a National Guard. WE DON'T NEED MORE NUTCASES GETTING GUNS. And fuck the second amendment, too.

I heard this on the radio and while all info is preliminary, one person dead, possibly the shooter, principle and a student shot but not life threatening. Of course it is all preliminary.

Gun debate to come later.

The reports are all over the map. (As is frequently the case in the early reporting on something like this.) MSNBC is reporting that as many as 20 kids may have been shot. (Initially they were saying that only one person; an adult; had been killed, and three others were injured)

ABC is reporting as many as 20 third or fourth grade kids shot.

My third grader nephew played baseball at this school, against their 8-9 team, in June -- I went to the game with him. These are, reportedly, the kids who were shot.

At least two teachers dead. One shooter dead -- two handguns, a glock and a sig sauer.

Oh my god.

UK news is reporting its an entire kindergarten class that's "unaccounted for" - awful just awful, hoping that the count goes down.
If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you may have misjudged the situation.

Some reports now that shooter was a father, and was wearing a bullet-proof vest. Because 6-year-olds are going to shoot you back??

There are reports of a second person in custody, but that frequently happens in situations like this, (it could be someone who just happened to be at the school who didn't work there) and it could well turn out this person had nothing to do with it.
Some reports now that shooter was a father
Oh if that turns out to be true, that's just...oh...if there's anything that could possibly make this any more sickening, that would be it....

What kind of black-hearted evil creature does a thing like this?

Words fail me....

I just saw another report saying the shooter was 20 years old....(which if accurate, would mean he's been identified)

If that's the case, it's highly unlikely it would be a parent; they're also reporting though that he had some sort of "direct connection" to the school.

AP says shooter was 20-years-old with ties to school.

CBS now reporting local law enforcement say two bodies found at home of shooter's mother. Good god.

Shooter's name and ID out there now: 20-something college student living in Hoboken NJ, from Newtown. His mother was a teacher at the school and is among the dead. See link above for continuing coverage.

This is sad and crazy; if life is too painful the thing to do would be to kill oneself, not innocents, especially babies. This is just crazy. Just saw a picture of the guy on TV; good looking young man; just goes to show that appearances mean nothing.
Soon, I’ll post my farewell message. The end is starting to get close. There are many misconceptions about me, and before I go, to live with my ancestors on the steppes, I want to set the record straight.

NBC is now reporting that the shooter's name was Ryan Lanza, 24.

Apparently he first went to the principal's office and shot several people there, then went to his mother's classroom (a kindergarten class) and massacred his mother and the kids.

I work down the street from the school in a local toy store. I've seen 40-50 state police turn up at the school. The FBI are also present. The police requested as many ambulances as possible.

It's now a non-active scene but I hear that, as the police work their way through the school, they are finding further bodies. I've left work now and am returning home.

You get an alert that more or less schools are locked down, there's been a shooting.

I didn't know what that meant. I called the police department, they did tell me that the shooting was at Sandy Hook. That's when my wife and I rushed down and came to the school.

There's no words that I could come up with that would even come close to describing the sheer terror of hearing that your son is in a place or your child is in a place where there's been violence.

You don't know the details of that violence, you don't know the condition of your child and you can't do anything to immediately help them or protect them. It is a powerless and terrifying experience.

[My son] heard loud noises. He described it as... the sound of, like, pans falling. His teacher went and checked. She closed and locked the door. They went into a corner until they were recovered by the police.

Unidentified mother

A friend of mine said that a masked man came in and just started shooting. I don't know how he came in because every time you go in you have to ring a bell and they can see you from the office and they know who you are and they let you in.

So I don't know if it's somebody they knew.

Her child

When we were gone during morning meeting we heard shots and everybody went on the ground and Miss Martin closed the door and we went to the corner.

Christian Witschy

I'm a teacher in a nearby town. This is shocking and terrifying. We always think this can't happen near us - we aren't in Colorado or Texas - but it's proof that we have a scary world right now.

My boss's wife is a teacher at Sandy Hook. She is safe, thank God.

No-one knows exactly what has happened - we are so shocked.

I'm still at school now, the children have gone home but I teach kids of the same age as those at Sandy Hook.

We had to calm the kids down at our school when we heard about the shooting. The kids are leaving now. They knew about it, especially the older ones.
