My personal solution? Given the political realities and dynamics...
It's time to give Simpson-Bowles an up or down vote in both Houses...
I was initially against it, but compared to everything else the active political class on both sides of the aisle have been able to come up with since it was proposed, it's starting to look like Natalie Wood on a Pontiac Hood...
Acceptance of Simpson-Bowles, would at a single stroke, bring in tax reform, debt reduction, and entitlement reform, in one politically painful fell swoop....(to both sides)
And then the government could move on to being dysfunctional about immigration reform, gun legislation, and a whole host of other issues...
I don't expect this to happen of course, but that would be my proposal....

The cuts I suggested come to about 33 billion dollars including the African aids program true that would not even pay interest on the national debt, but it is billions that can be applied to taking care of our own people.
Other things we can do is leave Afghanistan, Korea and all of Africa. And we also could close all of our European military bases except one for one use for transit.

I have to say I find the folks, on both the left and the right, who seem to be ready to embrace a 50% reduction in defense spending (well meaning though they may be) to be kind of well, nuts.... (or at the very least, hideously misguided)

The People's Republic Of China fill the vacuum...Jim is right, but we have to do something and we may be able to do it in such a way it doesn’t hurt defense too much. Throughout most of the 19th Century, the Brits were in fact "the world's policemen" and they made a damn good job of it too...

While 50% may be a bit much there is little doubt that we could cut 20% or even more without effecting our ability to do what we need to. The waste involved in defense contracts is astronomical.
