After being gouged with a huge increase in my auto insurance policy, today I received the following letter about my home policy:
Dear Mr. XXXXXXX:
After a review of your property insurance policy, we have noted that you do not presently carry "Water/Sewer Backup" coverage on your policy. "Water/Sewer Backup" is valuable coverage that protects you should water back up from the sewer line into your home or from sump pump failure.
We recommend you add this coverage to your policy, even if you do not have a basement, as water can cause damage to a crawl space. If you would love this valuable coverage added to your policy, please call our office for pricing, 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX.
Thank you for choosing XXXXXXXXXX for your insurance needs.
I live on the 24th floor, as the address to which the letter was sent clearly indicates.
I am tempted to call and ask them about the coverage, just to see what they would say when I asked if I was in danger of sewer backup.
Morons all.

That's why I call them "premium collection companies."

Not that I would buy the coverage even though I have a cesspool, but one might buy it to be covered in the event that ones toilet backs up and ruins the floor/tile/carpet/whatever.
That's good to know. How many here have read their policies to see if they were/are covered for a similar misshap? I know I haven't, but will.
So now you can not obtain the insurance they know you would "love" to have.
Hmmm, Scooter's policy may indeed act as he believes it does but it's usually the case that "overflow from internal plumbing" is covered but water/sewer backup is not - it's a different category and the policy usually makes that clear with an explanatory definition of "overflow" etc. That usually contemplates 'clean' water from breaks in plumbing - even from the toilet cistern - but not something that comes back up from the sewer/sump pump. Which is why they offer the WSB option (and it is very cheap indeed). It's up to the homeowner to determine whether they need/want that coverage - not the insurance company.
I remember an occasion in Twinsburg when we had a sudden rash of purchases of WSB after the city had contracted a company to use air pressure to clean the sewer lines using air pressure. They neglected to close off one particular channel and blew sewage back though toilets in four or five nearby houses.
When an insurance company sends out information on a general basis about an option that is offered, it would be moronic for them NOT to send it to everyone. Why should some clerk in an insurance company office decide that YOU don't need coverage X (whatever it is) and purposely not tell YOU about it? Good grounds for a court case there.
What is moronic about NOT paying someone to examine every address on a general mailing to ensure that no-one above the (say) third floor gets the mailing? And how do they know that I am not (ever) going to experience the hazard for which they offer an optional coverage no matter where I live?
Pity Scooter doesn't read my posts
