Run Monty Run!!!!

Post by Gob »

The US state of Florida is set to begin a competitive Burmese python hunt, in an attempt to rid the Everglades wetlands of the invasive species.

The month-long contest, called the Python Challenge, begins on Saturday.

About 550 people have signed up to compete for two prizes: $1,000 (£620) for the longest python killed and $1,500 for the most pythons taken.

First imported as pets, the feral snakes vie with native animals for food and have devastated mammal populations.

The US banned the import of the carnivorous snakes last year. But some wildlife officials said the ban came too late - after the southern Asia natives had begun breeding in the Everglades.

Burmese pythons, which can grow up to 23ft (7m) long, eat small mammals, birds and alligators.

Hunters from more than 25 states have signed up for the event. Among them will be US Senator Bill Nelson, a 70-year-old Democrat.

The state will train hunters to avoid mistaking the python for native snakes, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) spokeswoman Carli Segelson said.

The FWC recommends shooting the snakes in the head or using a device that drives a bolt into the brain. Hunters will be able to keep the pelts.

Decapitation is not recommended unless the brain is immediately destroyed, as snakes can remain conscious for a time after the head is separated from the body.

Remind me to steer clear of Florida until they get rid of these things.

I fear they will never be able to entirely eradicate them. They are far too adept at survival and the swamps are too well stocked with food. On the other hand they, themselves, are a very tasty food source. Put a bounty on the skin, which can be tanned and used as a good source of leather, and develope a market for the meat and you may, just may, make a dent in the population. It would take up to 20 years to see improvement but something is better than nothing. Without some efforts they will become an ever increasing threat to humans especially since there are concerns that they are interbreeding with the African Rock Python which is a very agressive species with little or no fear of humans.

Perhaps the next time someone proposes fucking with the ecology in order to achieve some "benefit" for humans, he/she should be put in a cage with the spawn of these creatures.

This plague was the result of stupid pet owners setting their snakes "free" when they realized the limitations of the bond of python-human affection are driven by reptilian, and not human, sensibilities.

It is the Bambi-fucks, the same assholes who abandon pets they no longer want of all kinds, who did this.

If you have a pet you cannot or do not want to take care of your job is to kill it if you don't find it a new home.

I realize what the cause of this particular problem was. I was speaking more generally of those who pursue policies that are destructive to the environment without regard to the consequences.

If I was down in Fla I would have signed up for this hunt. Never ate python, but have had rattlesnake. I would eat what I killed (just the way I am). And 23 feet of skin would make a few belts and/or wallets.

I love that song!!

Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la

When the day is dawning,
On a Texas Sunday Morning
How I long to be there
With Marie who's waiting for me there
Every lonely city
Where i hang my hat
Ain't as half as pretty,
As where my baby's at

(Chorus)
Is this the way to Armadillo?
Every night I've been hugging my pillow
Dreaming dreams of Armadillo
And sweet Marie who waits for me
Show me the way to Armadillo
I've been weeping like a willow
Crying over Armadillo
And sweet Marie who waits for me

Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
And Marie who waits for me

There's a church bell ringing
With a song of joy that its singing
For the sweet Maria
And the guy who's coming to see her
Just beyond the highway
There's an open plain and it keeps me going
Through the wind and rain

(Chorus)
Is this the way to Armadillo?
Every night I've been hugging my pillow
Dreaming dreams of Armadillo
And sweet Marie who waits for me
Show me the way to Armadillo
I've been weeping like a willow
Crying over Armadillo and sweet Marie who waits for me

Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
And Marie who waits for me

Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
And Marie who waits for me (sing till fades)

"Saddle Up The Armadillo"

Oh, oh, Carmelina,
The daughter
of the wealthy banker.
Since she came to town
all my friends are gone,
And I'm stuck
out here with melody.

Saddle up the Armadillo,
the sun is going down.
The way I feel,
this must be real.

If you can't cut it,
don't pick up the knife.
There's no reward
in your conscience stored
When you're sleepin'
with another man's wife.

Saddle up the Armadillo,
the sun is going down.
The way I feel,
this must be real.

I wanna lick the platter,
the gravy doesn't matter.
It's a cold bowl of chili
when love lets you down,
But it's the neighbor's wife
I'm after.

Saddle up the Armadillo,
the sun is going down.
The way I feel,
this must be real.
Sometimes it seems as though one has to cross the line just to figger out where it is
