Obama unveils sweeping plan to battle gun violence

Invoking the painful memory of the schoolchildren murdered in Newtown, Conn., a month ago, President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced the most ambitious gun-control drive in generations. Proposals include universal background checks for every would-be gun buyer as well as bans on assault weapons and ammunition clips that hold more than 10 bullets. Some of his proposals are sure to run headlong into fierce opposition from Republicans and some Democrats in Congress as well as the powerful NRA lobby.

"I will put everything I’ve got into this,” Obama, flanked by Vice President Joe Biden, promised an audience that included relatives of the first-graders slaughtered at Sandy Hook Elementary School, survivors of other mass shootings, and elected officials.

"While there is no law, or set of laws, that can prevent every senseless act of violence completely, no piece of legislation that will prevent every tragedy, every act of evil, if there’s even one thing we can do to reduce this violence, if there’s even one life that can be saved, then we’ve got an obligation to try," Obama said in a speech. "And I’m going to do my part."

You go boyfriend!
I have so many problems with outlawing things and with allowing things especially with guns and their damage that I have trouble sorting through my thoughts. Bottom line is I don't think anything done will prevent any of the mass killings. Nuts will still be nuts and will find a way. McVeigh didn't use a gun. Others should not have had access to guns, yet they were able to obtain them.

How many legal gun owners have committed these killings?

‘‘The truth is that our society is populated by an unknown number of genuine monsters – people so deranged, so evil, so possessed by voices and driven by demons that no sane person can possibly ever comprehend them. They walk among us every day,’’ he said, adding that the only way to protect children was to prevent the government creating what he called ‘‘dangerous gun-free zones’’ in schools.

Yep, them dangerous gun free zones in school. Are these people insane?

I don't see why the suggestion of armed guards at schools is dismissed out of hand. MAny schools already have unarmed security guards. Many elite private schools have armed security guards.
We protect many places anad possessions with armed guards (money, businesses, etc). Why not protect our children while in school with armed guards?

It's not like they are going to post an M16, grenade toting marine in full cammo. The guards can be dressed in a presentable way, uniform or suit with guns not visible.

As I said, it should be debated, not dismissed without talking about it.

IMO, none of these new gun laws (here in NY) are not going to stop someone hell bent on destruction.

One hundred percent correct; however, the Mary Poppins sect is opposed to it because it is scary. It would be nice if we lived in Mary Poppins’ world, but we don’t.

I find it quite breathtaking that those who live in "The Greatest Country In The World Goddamn It!"(tm) would even be contemplating having armed guards in schools. It seems like a total suspension of rationality.

Mind you, you are also prepared to put up with a second rate prospect of life expectancy, a debt ridden economy, a terrible employment rate, TV evangelists, Rush Libaugh etc etc.....

Yep, you got me, I always wanted Hatch to go to a school where armed guards were needed. Shit, every school she's been to has had no guards at all, let alone armed ones, it's a wonder she made it to 17!

The prospect of dying early is fun. I love the idea of living in debt, so much better than spending your own money, TV evangelicals, well, I sent $111,000 to Billy Bob Buttfuck last week, as only he has the word of the lord, if only he came to our city to prey, sorry pray. Ruth Libaugh you can keep though, drug-addled ranting buffoons were never my thing.

A handgun has been discovered in the school bag of a seven-year-old boy in New York City, prompting a temporary lockdown at his elementary school.

The weapon was not fired and no-one was hurt, police said.

The Wave Preparatory Elementary School in Queens was locked down for less than an hour, police said.

The incident comes days after New York State passed a sweeping gun control law, in the wake of a school schooting that killed 27 people in Connecticut.

The massascre in Newtown fuelled debate over whether gun control laws should be tightened in the US.

Police declined to comment on why the boy had the .22 calibre handgun or how it was discovered.
Damn, you're becoming a police state there. Taking away this kid's god given second amendment right to shoot the fuck out of anyone who crosses him, whatever next?

Gob old mate it is the only thing that will work for us unless we are prepared to turn our country into a police state and make criminals out of half the people in the country. There is a difference between your country and ours; out of three hundred million plus people we have more than enough lunatics to do it again and the only way it can be prevented is to have people on site that can stop a massacre before it starts.

We try to treat our lunatics, rather than arm them.

Maybe that's where you've been going wrong...
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

After the home visit I just did, which culminated in a police chase, arrest and involuntary admission, I know I am SO FUCKING GLAD I do not live in a country where any lunatic with $50 can get a gun!!!

Well, does a lunatic really care about the legality of the transaction? :nana

I don't think anyone wants the loons to be armed, and would prefer they be treated. Problem is identifying them BEFORE they go on a rampage. Some of the new legislation is proposing that, but I am doubtful it will help much.
They are talking about private doctors turning in their patients if they "seem" to be leaning towards harming themselves and/or others. Don't knwo if medical doctors are fully trained to spot this. Then there is that nasty doctor-patient confidentiality.

I've heard talk of priest and clergymen being enlisted for the same thing.

No easy solution.
