Scary weird....A highly trained (both military and police) cop killer, completely familiar with police procedures and defensive practices on the loose:
Manhunt for former police officer in three L.A. killings

LOS ANGELES -- Thousands of police officers throughout Southern California and neighbouring states hunted Thursday for a disgruntled former Los Angeles officer wanted for going on a deadly shooting rampage that he warned in an online posting would target those on the force who wronged him, authorities said.

Police issued a statewide "officer safety warning" and police were sent to protect people named in the posting that was believed to be written by the fired officer, Christopher Dorner, who has military training. Among those mentioned were members of the Los Angeles Police Department.

"I will bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare to those in LAPD uniform whether on or off duty," said the manifesto. It also asserted: "Unfortunately, I will not be alive to see my name cleared. That's what this is about, my name. A man is nothing without his name."

Dorner has available multiple weapons including an assault rifle, said police Chief Charlie Beck, who urged Dorner to surrender. "Nobody else needs to die," he said.

More than 40 protection details were assigned to possible targets of Dorner. Police spokesman Cmdr. Andrew Smith said he couldn't remember a larger manhunt by the department.

The hunt spread from California to Nevada, Arizona and Mexico, said a U.S. Marshals Service official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to publicly comment.

The search for Dorner, who was fired from the LAPD in 2008 for making false statements, began after he was linked to a weekend killing in which one of the victims was the daughter of a former police captain who had represented him during the disciplinary hearing. Authorities believe Dorner opened fire early Thursday on police in cities east of Los Angeles, killing an officer and wounding another.

Beck detailed Dorner's alleged crimes in an unusual press conference in an underground room at police headquarters, where extra security was deployed. The chief said there had been a "night of extreme tragedy in the Los Angeles area" and that all measures were being implemented to ensure officer safety.

Police said Dorner, 33, implicated himself in the couple's killings with the multi-page "manifesto."

A Facebook post believed written by Dorner said he knew he would be vilified by the LAPD and the news media, but that "unfortunately, this is a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD and reclaim my name."

Los Angeles police believe the manifesto posted to Facebook was written by Dorner because there are details in it only he would know.

As police searched for him, the packed Los Angeles area was on edge. The nearly 10,000-member LAPD dispatched many of its officers to protect potential targets. The department also pulled officers from motorcycle duty, fearing they would make for easy targets.

In San Diego, where Dorner allegedly tied up an elderly man and unsuccessfully tried to steal his boat Wednesday night, Naval Base Point Loma was locked down Thursday after a Navy worker reported seeing someone who resembled Dorner.

Navy Cmdr. Brad Fagan said officials don't believe he was on base Thursday but had checked into a base hotel on Tuesday and left the next day without checking out. Numerous agencies guarded the base.

Fagan said Dorner was honourably discharged and that his last day in the Navy was last Friday.

Nevada authorities also looked for Dorner because he owns a house nine miles from the Las Vegas Strip, according to authorities and court records.

Authorities said the U.S. Navy reservist may be driving a dark colored 2005 Nissan Titan pickup truck.

The hunt for Dorner led to two errant shootings in the pre-dawn darkness Thursday.

Los Angeles officers guarding a "target" named in the posting shot and wounded two women in suburban Torrance who were in a pickup but were not involved, authorities said. It's not clear if the target is a person or a location. Beck said one woman was in stable condition with two gunshot wounds and the other was being released after treatment.

"Tragically we believe this was a case of mistaken identity by the officers," Beck said.

Minutes later Torrance officers responding to a report of gunshots encountered a dark pickup matching the description of Dorner's, said Torrance Sgt. Chris Roosen. A collision occurred and the officers fired on the pickup. The unidentified driver was not hit and it turned out not to be the suspect vehicle, Roosen said.
[With thousands of cops throughout a huge region all looking nervously over there shoulders, there are likely to be more incidents like this. They really need to get this guy]

"We're asking our officers to be extraordinarily cautious just as we're asking the public to be extraordinarily cautious with this guy. He's already demonstrated he has a propensity for shooting innocent people," said Smith, the LAPD commander.

Dorner is wanted in the killings of Monica Quan and her fiance, Keith Lawrence. They were found shot in their car at a parking structure at their condominium on Sunday night in Irvine, authorities said.

Quan, 28, was an assistant women's basketball coach at Cal State Fullerton. Lawrence, 27, was a public safety officer at the University of Southern California. There was disbelief at three college campuses, Fullerton, USC, and Concordia University, where the two met when they were both students and basketball players.

Dorner was with the department from 2005 until 2008, when he was fired for making false statements.

Quan's father, a former LAPD captain who became a lawyer in retirement, represented Dorner in front of the Board of Rights, a tribunal that ruled against Dorner at the time of his dismissal, LAPD Capt. William Hayes told The Associated Press Wednesday night.

Randal Quan retired in 2002. He later served as chief of police at Cal Poly Pomona before he started practicing law.

According to documents from a court of appeals hearing in October 2011, Dorner was fired from the LAPD after he made a complaint against his field training officer, Sgt. Teresa Evans. Dorner said that in the course of an arrest, Evans kicked suspect Christopher Gettler, a schizophrenic with severe dementia.

Richard Gettler, the schizophrenic man's father, gave testimony that supported Dorner's claim. After his son was returned on July 28, 2007, Richard Gettler asked "if he had been in a fight because his face was puffy" and his son responded that he was kicked twice in the chest by a police officer.

Early Thursday, the first shooting occurred in Corona and involved two LAPD officers working a security detail, said LAPD Sgt. Alex Baez. A citizen pointed out Dorner to the officers who followed until his pickup stopped and the driver got out and fired a rifle at them, officials said. One officer's head was grazed by a bullet.

Later, two officers on routine patrol in neighbouring Riverside were ambushed at a stop light by a motorist who drove up next to them and opened fire with a rifle. One died and the other was seriously wounded but was expected to survive, said Riverside police Chief Sergio Diaz.

Diaz said news organizations should withhold the officers' names because the suspect had made clear that he considers police and their families "fair game."

Dorner's LAPD badge and an ID were found near San Diego's airport and were turned in to police at early Thursday, San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick said.

"The Violence of action will be HIGH," Dorner wrote. "I will bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare to those in LAPD uniform whether on or off duty ... You will now live the life of the prey ... I have the strength and benefits of being unpredictable, unconventional, and unforgiving."
You can read the whole weird, rambling nine page "manifesto" here:

I think in this case it's much more likely that when he's finally cornered he'll keep shooting trying to kill as many cops as he can (since killing as many cops as he can seems to be his whole objective) until they take him down....

This doesn't look like a "suddenly snapped" kind of thing to me...my guess is he's been planning this for a while, and he probably has supplies, hideouts, etc. all pre-positioned. So long as he remains disciplined, I think it's really going to take a maximum effort to get him.

He's not the kind of spree killer who goes into attack mode and then tries to take out as many people as he can in one go, figuring he'll go out in a blaze of glory....

He's attacking a couple of people at a time where he thinks he can get away and then launch another attack later...(He may even wait until he thinks the cops have let there guard down before he strikes again) He's trying to elude capture and stay alive as long as possible, (he probably won't launch an attack unless he's already worked out what he thinks is a viable escape route) figuring that's the way to get the most attention and ultimately kill the largest number of his "high value targets"....

And given his "asymmetrical warfare" warnings, and his training, I suspect he may have more than shootings in his bag of tricks....I'd also be looking for letter bombs, cars wired to explode and other booby traps, etc...(I'm sure the cops are thinking about these possibilities as well)

He seems to want to engage the media, and that may be where he ultimately slips up...

Sooner or later he's going to get careless and make a mistake; the question is how many more people are going to die before that happens...

I wonder if he will use civilians as pawns or bait. Most people see someone in a police uniform, they trust him (or trust the uniform, at least). I can easily see this nut doing the same thing. (Hell, didn't Dennis Hopper's villain do the exact same damn thing in Speed?)

Authorities in Los Angeles have offered a $1m (£630,000) reward for information leading to the arrest of a fugitive ex-policeman suspected of three murders.

Christopher Dorner, 33, has been on the run for the past week, following the attacks in southern California.

Announcing the reward, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said his "reign of terror" must end.

In an online manifesto, he swore to take revenge on police officers he blamed for his firing in 2008.

"We will not tolerate anyone undermining the security, the tranquillity of our neighbourhoods," Mr Villaraigosa said at a news conference announcing the reward on Sunday.

"We will not tolerate this reign of terror that has robbed us of the peace of mind that residents of southern California deserve," he added.

DORNER AIN'T CRAZY...

Post by RayThom »

... just a horribly conflicted sociopath. Here is a breakdown of the previously posted Dorner manifesto. Just look at this eclectic mix and juxtaposition of celebrities and well know people. It seems like he loves everyone but the LAPD.

http://www.heavy.com/news/2013/02/chris ... /#comments

I think he's more bluster than anything else. Yes, Dorner has proven himself to be capable of death and mass destruction but at the inevitable shortened end to his life-gone-wrong I doubt if it's going to be anything more than an extended shootout. A sniper's .308 round will no doubt be the last thing to go through his twisted mind. Of course, authorities will be horribly remiss if they don't plan for the worse. Call me a totally obtuse optimist but I'm saying it will be bullets, and not bombs, that will be his last statement.

And may God have mercy on his miserable soul. Absolutely no one else will.

That's not clear Dale; I'm following this on CNN, and there are a lot of conflicting reports at the moment...

There was a shoot out, two officers were shot, (their condition has not been reported) then a home invasion, then an auto chase, now he's on foot...

Some reports say he's in a building, others have him back in the woods...

When a story like this breaks, there's always a lot contradictory reports...

Now the Sheriff's department is officially saying that he is definitely pinned down in a cabin (from the looks of it it's a good sized modern type) still conflicting reports on whether or not he has hostages...

The authorities are supposed to be holding a news conference at the top of the hour.

Police in California have denied reports that a body was found in a burnt-out mountain cabin where a man believed to be a ex-policeman accused of three murders was holed up.
Flames were seen rising from the cabin, as a police Swat team went in.

There were initially reports that a burnt body had been found, but police say the remains of the cabin have yet to be searched.

This comes after a shoot-out in which a local sheriff's deputy was killed.

Another police officer is in hospital with injuries.

The gunman was believed to be Christopher Dorner, 33, a former member of the Los Angeles police force.

He had reportedly sworn revenge on police officers he blamed for his sacking in 2008.

But, denying earlier news reports that a body had been found, Los Angeles Police Commander Andrew Smith said the cabin was "still too hot and no inspectors had access to it yet".

Robert Holguin
More: Bio, Recent Stories, News Team
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- According to the LAPD, shooting suspect Christopher Jordan Dorner was fired because he lied about an incident back in 2007 when he was a rookie cop working alongside a training officer.
Dorner filed a lawsuit in an effort to try to keep his job, but that lawsuit was rejected, and so was his appeal. That chain of events appears to have triggered Dorner's alleged revenge rampage.
Dorner served as an officer with the LAPD from 2005 until 2008, when he was fired for making false statements.
It was August 2007 when the rookie police officer and his training officer responded to a call of a disruptive man at a hotel in the South Bay. Dorner had just returned home from his year-long deployment.
According to court papers, Dorner and his partner struggled with the man, identified as Christopher Gettler. The training officer Tased the suspect, who fell into some bushes before being handcuffed and taken into custody. But that's where Dorner's story differs. According to Dorner's so-called manifesto, his training officer "kicked the suspect twice in chest and once in the face. The kick to the face left a visible injury on the left cheek below the eye."
Ex-LAPD Officer Chris Dorner manifesto: Read it now
Several weeks later, Dorner reported his version of the story to his superiors. A panel investigated his claims, but the LAPD says Dorner fabricated the story because his training officer had written an unfavorable review of his performance.
"I think that in the analysis you'll find Dorner's statements to be self-serving, and the statements of somebody that is extremely unhappy with his life," LAPD Police Chief Charlie Beck said at a news conference Thursday morning.
Beck said the department conducted a thorough investigation of the incident and found that Dorner was lying.
"That case was thoroughly adjudicated, it was reviewed at multiple levels, it went to the ultimate form of review in the LAPD, a board of rights, where a two-command officer and a civilian representative hear the entirety of the case, as represented by an attorney, and make a judgment," Beck said.
In 2008, Dorner was fired from his job with the LAPD. He claims his dismissal was in retaliation for his report against his training officer.
In his Manifesto, Dorner stated: "Even [Getttler's] father stated that his son said he was kicked by [the training officer]..."
Gettler's father, Richard, said he believed that Dorner was telling the truth about the incident with his son, and he had a message for the accused murderer.
"He's obviously a man who wanted to be a good cop, and I'm sure once he testified against his mentor, I'm sure they gave him heck, he went through a living nightmare the last few years that he was an officer," Richard Gettler said.
Christopher Dorner manhunt: See a timeline of key events
In 2009, Dorner filed suit in LA County Superior Court in an effort to keep his job. But that petition was rejected in May 2010. Dorner appealed that decision, but his appeal was rejected in October 2011.
In his manifesto, Dorner identified his training officer as one of his targets, saying: "You destroyed my life and name because of your actions. Time is up. The time is now to confess to Chief Beck."
But Beck says he's not interested in Dorner's opinions.
"You're talking about a homicide suspect who has committed atrocious crimes, and if you want to give any attribution to his ramblings on the Internet, go right ahead, but I do not," Beck said.
Police say Dorner started acting out on his revenge plot on Sunday night when he allegedly shot and killed 27-year-old Keith Lawrence and 28-year-old Monica Quan at their apartment complex in Irvine.
say he killed the couple because Quan's father is a former LAPD captain-turned-lawyer who was involved in the review process that led to Dorner's dismissal from the LAPD.
Dorner also had a long career in the Navy that started in 2002 and ended last Friday. The Navy reservist had reached the rank of lieutenant. His one overseas deployment sent him to Bahrain from 2006 to 2007.
He received several medals and ribbons, including the pistol expert medal and the rifle marksman ribbon. The military says these honors are common.

He had the right idea, he just went about it the completely wrong way. He definitely deserves jail time for trying to go out in a blaze of glory.

But the LAPD haven't exactly made themselves look good during this. They managed to shoot up a blue pickup truck (Dorner was driving a grey one) that had two Asian women inside it. They shot one in the back twice, and the other was wounded by broken glass.

They then rammed a white guy in a truck that was a different model and color than Dorner's and proceeded to shoot at him. He wasn't injured by bullets or glass, but was injured when he was rammed.

And they apparently intentionally set the cabin on fire according to people listening to police scanners during the standoff.
