Well CP, it doesn't come as a huge surprise to me that the impact of the bomb on Hiroshima was horrific, or that the tale of someone who survided it would reflect that....
I guess the larger message is supposed to be about perseverence, even in the face of absolute horror and loss...
But I will say it doesn't really point fingers...(I recall the scene where the mother seems to blame her own country's leadership for failing to surrender sooner...)
That's what struck me it was largely neutral toward the Americans and critical of the Japanese govt. I have seen this Anime called "anti-war" but I see it more as pointing out the foolishness of carrying on a war past the point where defeat is certain.

It also brought home the dangers of nuclear proliferation. The horrors depicted are such that it drives home the message that it is not something that should be allowed in the wrong hands.
