An idea regarding Nursing Homes....

I haven't posted anything in this thread, but I have been following it with interest...

but don't sacrifice your own sanity or life to cater to their whims.

My wife is the best person on earth and goes above and beyond what a daughter should do, but that's her choice. I help as much as I can between working and going to AA meetings. They never should have bought the house they did and within a year I would guess that will be sold and they will either go to an assisted living facility or move in with us even though her sister has the larger house with rooms to spare as her children are out and married and have their own houses.
Such is life and family.
I am a big believer in family so we are willing and able to make the sacrifice.

Oldr, assisted living is long term care. I promise you, licensed or unlicensed they are nursing homes under a different guise. They dress up the rooms as "apartments, they are cleaner and nicer looking but there are CNAs wiping behinds.

As I told my dad "I ain't wiping your ass" but if/when the time comes, I will.

What also needs to be considered is that what you are told now by your parents, may change radically as they age and become less compos mentis. I hear it in my mother's voice now, that slight lack of certainty, that small change in perspective, the shift away from true rationality.

At 94, my grandmother has said many times she'd rather be dead than in a nursing home (which she calls "warehouses for people who haven't realized they're dead yet"). This is usually followed by something like, "But don't count your inheritance yet; I plan to be here a while!" (Her mother lived to 96, her aunt and grandmother to 100+, so she might be right.)
