Being someone who has been known to take a risk or two, I always felt a strong obligation to give blood.Donor Message:
I will be returning to the UK for a holiday in Oct 2013. I have lived in Australia for the past 12 years. I would like to donate blood in the UK, as I am unable to in Australia, (due to me having lived in the UK during the BSE scandal.)
Is this possible?
I was a gold badge donator in the uk, and am O rh-
Best wishes,
Mr Gob.
Dear Mr Gob
Thank you for your e mail.
You would be most welcome to donate when you return in October, provided you meet all the normal criteria. It would probably be a good idea to register with us and book an appointment nearer the time-this can all be done via the website.
We look forward to seeing you again
Many thanks for your support.
Best Regards

Re: I can give blood!!
Brilliant news Gob!
I'm a silver donor. I'll be back donating as soon as I've recovered sufficiently from the op I had on Monday.

Re: I can give blood!!
There's another one of those blood donation bans that is both an overreach and insufficient at the same time. In Canada you cannot donate blood if you spent a cumulative total of at least three months in the U.K. between 1980 and 1996, and there are other rules that apply to stays in the rest of Europe during that period. But the only way to get vCJD is to eat the meat of animals that carry it. So anyone who doesn't include those animals in their diet is not at risk. Conversely, the three month cut off will not screen out donors who have spent less time in the U.K., but still consumed meat during the time that infected animals were in the food supply.
You screen for risk behaviours. You don't screen out people.

I've donated more blood, plasma and platelettes then I remember. Somewhere in the 5 gallon territory. I did stop when I became a hardcore alcoholic. I should contact red cross as it's been a while since I drank.

I gave up after an incompetent twit with a needle nearly put me in the hospital. After one experience with nine (unsuccessful) pokes and another where the twit jammed the needle THROUGH the vein, I said no more.

Re: I can give blood!!
My first time giving blood that lady missed and missed and missed. Finally she got it (and my viens are very pronounced so I think she was "new") and I gave my pint. Black and blue on most of my arm was a small price. Kept going back every 56? days.

Re: I can give blood!!
I used to like giving blood. I started as soon as I thought I was allowed to and gave blood at least twice a year fotr many, many years - I found out later I was actually a year or so too young when I started, but by the time I found this out I was 'legal' so it didn't matter any more - they'd misread / not properly read my year of birth on the form. People were a bit more casual about the whole donating process back in those pre-AIDs days.
Not long after my middle son was born he needed a couple of blood transfusions. He and I were/are an exact blood match and they allowed me to give the blood that was transfused to him (both times). That's a pretty special feeling!!
I 'paused' on the donating while having my children, and then around the time I would have started up again I got Ross River fever, and then during recovery - while my immune system was a bit vulnerable - I got a 'mild' Legionnaires. I wasn't allowed to give blood for a few years after that, and then a bit later I had an accident, lost a bit of blood, then ended up with low iron for a little while etc etc ... it was just one thing after another for a few years!!
Then I moved to an area where the place to donate wasn't very convenient to either my home or work, and by then I was out of the habit. So I haven't given blood now for years.
I'd probably be fine to do it now - I might have look to look into just how inconvenient and awkward it would be to get to the place from work.

While there was that, being the alcoholic I am, my thought most times was, go get a few drinks as I will get buzzed quicker and cheaper. No matter what else happens that day you know you did something worth while.
