Spot On!

Post by Andrew D »

Exactly the right thing:
What, one wants to whisper into his still endearingly jug ears, have you got to lose? If you insist on waiting it out, why not kick over the table once the jackpot is finally yours? If Charles I gave the British regicide, and Charles II gave it restoration, why shouldn’t you, at the moment of coronation, give it at long last a republic? Why not take the crown from the archbishop’s hands—not to set it on your own head, à la Napoleon—but merely to set it aside, a simple and grand refusal? And why not do some advance colluding with your eldest son, who by all accounts quite genuinely loves you, so that, when everyone’s eyes turn in his direction, he simply shakes his head and refuses it, too? At that point, the whole flyblown confection of monarchy will collapse.

The Scots may by then have disappeared over the Highlands, into independence, depriving the United Kingdom of its adjective. Charles could take the king out of the kingdom, the scepter from the isle. He could smash the strongest pillar of his people’s magical thinking and subconscious self-hatred. Then, if he really seeks to restore the greenness of his green and pleasant land, he could—enhanced rather than diminished—jolt the country into taking desperate measures.

Nothing would become his reign like the renunciation of it.

What!

Shut down a money-making venture like the McMonarchy theme park? The McMonarchy reallity show? [ See the Beautiful and gracious lady Diana Spencer snubbed by her Magesty QE the second and cheated on by her husband who apparently does NOT like women better-looking than he is!] The whole McMonarchy press machine [ The queen ate wheaties and had a nice bowel movement this morning, unnamed insiders report. She also said "Fuck that asshole Murdoch, we should never have let him out of Australia." ].

I dunno. What are they going to do with all that property?

Oh, not at all. Queens will still be welcome in San Francisco.

Up to that point (and maybe a little further), I thought for sure this was going to be about Obama.

England had a Republic once before....

It didn't work out well...

But the movie was excellent...

Of course, how can you go wrong with Richard Harris and Alec Guinness...

I think Charles should renounce his position, and step aside for William. I've never had any time for the man myself.

no fan of Charles, but I do think it a bit entertaining that he might piss people off by refusing to step aside. Personally, I've never had any time for even the concept of royalty, so any wrench in the works is a lot of fun to watch.

I thought the Monarch(y) was a butterfly that commutes from north America to Mexico each fall.

I met Charles a few times some years ago through my work and I've got a lot of time for him. He comes across as a genuine bloke whose real problem is that he tries too hard. He does his best to relate to ordinary people but the situations he finds himself in are so far removed from his sphere of knowledge that he usually ends up looking stiff, awkward and more than a little silly. Better that though than a Royal who's sits aloof and above everyone and doesn't even attempt to interact with peasants... Better that than his scheming, manipulative first wife...

Anyway. Old Liz might decide on a change of career now that she's an award winning actress...
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

IMHO being a "Bond Girl" has lent a little prestige to her position...

I've felt that way for a number of years, ever since those tapes came out, (while he was still married to Diana) where he tells The Bowles Woman that he "wishes he was a tampon so he could be in her knickers everyday", and he published an autobiography that was full of self pity...."Pity Me, I'm The Prince Of Wales"

Not a bad man, but an extremely weak man; I think there's a lot his great uncle in him....

I personally believe that U.S. Americans have regal envy because, uh, some people out there in your nation don't have monarchs and, uh, I believe that your education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, your education over there in the U.S. is awful, uh, or, uh, should ask for help from South Africa and the Iraq and the Asian countries, so you learn to mind your own f***ing business
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Hey, I thought you became a U.S. American yourself?

And if us U.S. Americans minded our own business, what would the rest of the world have to complain about then?
