Another older song, another candidate for "best" (in this video, Prine says it's his favorite of all the songs he's ever written):

[EDIT: you just beat me to it, Jim! I even had the same version that you just posted.]

My God, that first album had some great songs on it! As for a recent best...well, I already posted "Some Humans Ain't Human" so here's another (slightly earlier) one of my recent favorites:

Iris DeMent performed that with him originally on the album of the same title, and does it best. I actually found a video of him performing it with Emmylou Harris in the female role, which you'd think would be pretty good, but unfortunately the audio on that one was really crappy.

BTW, I've gotta admit that that last song would have to be called pure solid country.

JP had some political songs...(especially related to the Vietnam War...)

Sam Stone is one of them...

But there were two others...

The Great Compromise probably being the most obvious...

At that time, Prine was given to rather heavy handed allegory...

"I knew a girl who was almost a lady; she had a way with all the men in her life...every inch of her blossomed in beauty; she was born on The 4th of July..."

( Gee whiz John, do you think you could make it just a little less obvious?... 8-) )

And Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Any More...

(A little more light hearted, but with a definite point.....)

Well she lived in a aluminum house trailer...

And she worked in a juke box saloon...

and she spent all the money that I give her...

Just to see the old man in the moon...

Well sometimes I feel awful lonesome.....

And I wish she were my girl instead...

But she won't let me with live her...

And she makes me live in my head...

I used to sleep at the foot of Old Glory...

And awake in The Dawn's Early Light....

But much to my surprise when I opened my eyes, I was a victim of The Great Compromise...

Political? How about the first one I posted ("Some Humans Ain't Human")?
Have you ever noticed
When you're feeling really good
There's always a pigeon
That'll come shit on your hood
Or you're feeling your freedom
And the world's off your back
Some cowboy from Texas
Starts his own war in Iraq
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.
