Well, at least we're not tossing people in the clink for calling somebody a "sheep shagger" or a "fat ugly Australian"...

GERMAN POLICE fired just 85 bullets in the course of duty across the whole of 2011, according to astonishing figures reported in the newspaper Der Spiegel.

Of those rounds used, 49 were not even discharged at a suspect, being fired as warning shots. Of the remaining 36, 15 resulted in injuries and six led to fatalities.

British police come out of the comparison well. Last year only two people were shot dead by police in England and Wales, while the country's largest force, the Metropolitan Police, fired just six shots in the 2009-10 figures

However, the figures for American police paint an altogether bleaker picture. While there are no nationwide figures compiled for firearms usage across the various police forces in the US, individual reports show single incidents when more bullets were fired than in the entire German year.

Russia Today (rather gleefully) reports how in Los Angeles in April 2012 LAPD officers unloaded more than 90 shots in an incident that led to the death of a 19-year-old man, and in the same month New York police fired at a suspected murderer 84 times.

Maher is talking completely out his ass on this one.

Just one example:

"In Britain, the police don't even carry guns"...

It's totally absurd to define a "police state" based on the firepower available to the police...

Whether or not a society is a "police state" is based on the mission and laws governing the use of police power, not the mere weaponry the police are equipped with.

Be hard to have less.

ETA;
In the year 2007–08, there were 6,780 Authorised Firearms Officers, 21,181 police operations in which firearms were authorised throughout England and Wales and 7 incidents where conventional firearms were used

I didn't even finish watching the clip. Once someone has made it clear that he can't tell a Humvee from a "half-track" it's pretty hard to listen to anything that follows.

ETA: ^Humvee^............................................^Half-track^
(shown in the video; called "half-tracks" by Maher).....(NOT shown in the video)

People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

If that video of cops shooting at the kid in the boat is real, why is he still alive?

Can't they shoot straight?

More importantly, why did they need to fire at him?

Especially when they wanted him alive?

Did I miss something? (Like those sharpshooting cops apparently did?)

So you are asserting that gratuitous insults are ok now? (this is far from the first time. You have become a serial reflexive shit-bomber like others.).

Mahr does make a good point. None of that military gear had anything to do with catching the suspects or making anyone actually safer. So why is it there? Do we really have small armies of terrorists attacking us here and there across America?

Is it just there to make a show of force for the gullible to think its helpful?
