Opemipo Jaji guilty of raping girl, 11, in London park

A man has been convicted of raping an 11-year-old girl in north London.

Opemipo Jaji, 18, of Edmonton, had denied dragging the girl into Jubilee Park, Enfield, before attacking her in November.

The Old Bailey heard the girl was raped repeatedly over three hours and traces of her blood were found on his bag and trainers.

Sentencing is due to take place on 7 June. Mr Justice Singh told the court that a life sentence was an option.

The jury was told the girl was attacked on her way home from school after she got off a bus in Enfield.

Jaji, who had also been on the bus, started following her so, feeling threatened, she crossed the road three times before starting to run in an attempt to get away.

But the teenager grabbed her and took her to a secluded part of the park where he forced a glove into her mouth before raping her.
Analysis Danny Shaw Home affairs correspondent, BBC News

Opemipo Jaji was a "time-bomb ready to go off" - the words Det Ch Insp Adam Lowe used. The question for the probation and prison authorities is what work went on to defuse the danger Jaji posed after he was jailed for sexual assault and whether he was adequately supervised as part of his community sentence for downloading indecent images of children.

Police don't believe Jaji attended any sexual offending treatment programmes, though it's thought discussions about this took place shortly before the rape. The Ministry of Justice reviews will also address whether Jaji should have been officially registered as a sex offender after the sexual assault conviction.

If he had been, police would have been able to conduct home visits - they may have discovered earlier the articles and pictures in his bedroom suggesting he had a sexual interest in pre-pubescent girls.
After the attack, the girl told police, she tried to escape twice but Jaji threatened to stab her, saying "I am this close to killing you".

Sarah Maclaren, from the Crown Prosecution Service, described the rape as a "vicious and horrific attack".

"I would like to thank the 11-year-old victim and her family for their enormous strength and courage in supporting this prosecution," she said.

An additional count of rape and one of attempted rape was requested to lie on his file.

Throughout the case Jaji denied his involvement in the assault.

But during the trial the jury was also told that he had pleaded guilty to previously sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in 2011.

He had followed the girl from a bus stop and took her to a housing estate where he threatened her, stuffed a school tie in her mouth and sexually assaulted her.

Jaji was sentenced to a 10-month detention and training order but was not registered as a sex offender.

In May 2012, he appeared before magistrates accused of having indecent images of children on his MP4 player after 600 images of girls were discovered on the device.

In September he pleaded guilty to an offence of making an indecent photograph of a child, and was given a community sentence.

Following the conviction, Det Ch Insp Adam Lowe, said: "Jaji posed a great danger to young girls and, despite the great weight of evidence against him, refused to accept his guilt and forced the victim to give evidence in court.

Maclaren, of the CPS, said: "A dangerous sexual offender has now been brought to justice"

"This was a particularly brutal but unusual attack on an innocent 11-year-old schoolgirl who will, no doubt, continue to suffer the emotional scars of what happened to her for a very long time."

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said there would now be two reviews of the handling of Jaji by the authorities.

The first will be a MAPPA (Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements) Case Review and will examine his all round supervision, including the time he was under the watch of the Youth Offending Team following his sexual assault conviction in February 2011.

The second investigation, known as a "Serious Further Offence" review, will look at the 11-week period he was under supervision after his conviction for possession of indecent images.

I think gob might be referring to his "sentences" for his previous offences.

What he received previously was not even a slap on the wrist and the justice department bears the blame.

Is castration an option? In addition to the life sentence, of course.

I'd also recommend castration for the judge who gave him the 10 month sentence for the first case...

How about this little charmer then?
A council has refused to reveal a review's findings into the care of a teenager who left a ten-year-old girl for dead - because it would cause the attacker 'further distress'.

Image

Stockton Borough Council has been accused of a 'cover up' because of its decision, which reviewed the care of Connor Hodgson, who lured the schoolgirl away from friends before beating her repeatedly, throttling her and leaving her on a river bank.

Image

She was left covered in blood and beaten so badly part of her head had to be shaved and she needed stitches across her scalp.

A review was carried out by Stockton Borough Council after people on the close-knit estate demanded to know why such a dangerous youth had been allowed to live in council care in their midst. However the anticipated publication of the report has been refused because officials are concerned about the effect it might have on the teenager. Hodgson, who was 16-years-old at the time of the attack, was jailed indefinitely last July after he admitted causing the girl grievous bodily harm with intent.

Teesside Crown Court was told he throttled her and beat her around the head so viciously he could have killed her. The brutal assault caused such outrage that police were forced to appeal for calm in the days following the incident.

The court heard Hodgson, who was in foster care, had a history of petty crime and had shown worrying sexual behaviour as a result of abuse he himself had suffered as a child. He could give no explanation for why he attacked the youngster in April last year. The council has been criticised by James Wharton, Conservative MP for Stockton South, who said their involvement in Hodgson's care should be released.

He said: 'Given that if there are any details which rightly should be kept private and confidential they could be redacted as is allowed under the Freedom of Information legislation. 'I can see no justification why this information is not released and it is clearly a matter of public interest. 'Many people will see this as an attempt to cover-up what may be a failure to implement any real changes following an extremely serious and worrying case.'

The girl, now 11, has left the estate with her family to start a new life in a different country. Her father said: 'He almost killed my daughter. Why was he allowed to be on our estate? 'He should not have been able to run the streets. 'The report should be made public so everyone knows the sort of person he is.'

It would appear that the devil has the UK by the balls.

Same as the US.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

A paedophile who abused two young children on an allotment has walked free because the judge said jailing him was 'unfair' on his family and would cost him his job.

A victim's father has criticised Judge Mark Lucraft for being 'too lenient' and 'living in cuckoo land' for handing factory worker Gary Karn a suspended sentence.

The 48-year-old from Norwich was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault against a child under 13 following a three day trial, in which the seven and eight-year-olds had to give evidence.

The court heard Karn inappropriately touched the girls as they picked raspberries from bushes at his allotment last September.

He told them he was brushing spiders off them but was found out after one of the girls told their mother that he had put his hands up her top.

The other victim told the court how he did it to her too, and put his hands down her trousers.

But rather than jailing the sex offender, Judge Lucraft suspended Karn's 18-month sentence for two years and banned him from working with children for five years.

He was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and was given a five-year sexual offences prevention order.

...banned him from working with children for five years.
Yeah, that should do it! He'll be all better by then... :loon :arg
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

One judge admits he made a bollocks of it!!
A judge has chastised himself for not doing ‘his public duty’ after sparing a burglar jail – only for the thief to break into another house just 11 days later.

Judge Scott Wolstenholme bemoaned his own ‘foolishly optimistic’ decision to give Steffan Jackson, 18, who had burgled his father’s home, a final chance. The teenager, whose own mother has had to call the police about him in the past, was given a community order. But less than two weeks later he burgled another house, this time belonging to an 87-year-old man. It is not the first time that Judge Wolstenholme’s ‘lenient’ sentencing has caused controversy. One man spared jail for a stabbing went on to murder four people.

Yesterday the judge admitted Jackson’s second victim had suffered directly because of his decision. ‘I was optimistic and, as it turns out, foolishly optimistic,’ he said. ‘Because of my optimism I am afraid [the victim] has suffered a huge loss which he wouldn’t have had I have been doing my public duty last time.’ He has now sent Jackson to a young offenders’ institution for four years after Leeds Crown Court heard how his elderly victim now felt anxious and afraid living on his own.

Last night, Jackson’s mother said she felt for the victim. Teresa McDarby, 52, said: ‘Steffan had a lot of court appearances and that was the first time he was given a chance – but he messed it up. ‘I’m not going to defend my kids if they do wrong, and I do feel for the victim. Steffan is no angel. I agreed with the judge when he gave him that chance. However, he blew it.’ Jackson targeted the elderly man’s house in Leeds early on April 1 this year. He was subject to a curfew after being given a 12-month community order for the previous burglary.

The court heard the teenager, who has been committing offences since he was 11, smashed a window to get in and stole more than £1,000 in cash. He was caught by police after he cut himself and left blood at the scene, later pleading guilty to burglary.
