A Gay Punter Comes to Oakland

Post by Joe Guy »

Punter and gay rights advocate Kluwe signs with Raiders :D

Chris Kluwe is coming to Oakland. That’s what the punter told his fellow supporter of equal rights, former Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, in a story for Fox Sports. Kluwe will compete with Marquette King for the starting job now that Shane Lechler is gone after 13 seasons.

As he did with the Minnesota Vikings, Kluwe plans to be outspoken on many issues, including gay rights.

“I’m still going to be myself socially and continue to tweet and interact with my fans,” Kluwe told Ayanbadejo.

Kluwe’s contract is for one year, and is for the league minimum.

“I’m excited to be an Oakland Raider and be playing in California,” Kluwe, who attended high school in Southern California before going to UCLA, said. “Now, my family can actually come to games.”

Kluwe, 31, averaged 45.0 yards on 72 punts last season as a Viking.

Kluwe said he is focused on punting, but he also told Fox Sports that he will keep his eye on Proposition 8 in California. Prop 8 was passed by voters in 2008 and governs that the state only recognize marriages between a man and a woman. The law’s legality was argued before the US Supreme Court in March, with a ruling expected in June, and Kluwe is optimistic about the likely repeal of the measure. If the measure is not repealed, however, he says it will be an issue of concern that will need to be addressed.

Last December, in a game against the Bears, Kluwe also made a statement for legendary Raiders punter Ray Guy.

Kluwe covered the Pro Football Hall of Fame patch on his jersey with a post-it message that read “Vote Ray Guy,” as a protest against the Hall’s 50th Anniversary celebrations because there are no pure punters in Canton.

A pic for dgs49... (this is not a picture of Kluwe)

Just because you are a "gay rights activist" does not necessarily mean you are a hoe-moe-sexual. Indeed, we have some people who post here who may very well be supporters of "gay rights," who are at least arguably hetero. I scanned the article for a specific mention, but it does not say that he is gay.

Didn't some basketball player recently get the distinction of being the first openly-gay, active player in a major sport?

Is your headline defamatory?

It depends on how one defines 'punter'.

Have you been to restrooms at the "Father Serra" Rest Stop off I280, Joe?

There are some real punters for ya!

And why are all these people smiling?

Yes I did stop there a couple times in the past when I needed to recycle beer.

It was renovated 3 or 4 years ago and a CHP office was built there. It looks different than you probably remember.

It's probably not as punter friendly as it once was... :D

All the best parts of San Mateo county are falling by the wayside.

Remember the Pulgas Water Temple?

When you could park right there?

Sawyer Camp Road?

When you could actually drive your car on it?

It's enough to get one pissed off and move to ANTIOCH! :arg

Now there is a gate around the area and it's not always open.

Last time I was ever there I was driving by 72 VW and drinking beer with friends.

Now every day Crystal Springs Road is lined with parked SUVs and people finishing their Starbucks Lattes before they go on to ride bikes dressed up in spandex and pointed helmets and living in some kind of alternate world believing they're in the Tour de France and needing to look the part when all they really are is a pathetic looking cyclist selfish wannabees that get in the way of automobiles on the road and acting indignant when those automobiles invade their space as their sweating lumpy assess wiggle in the face of passers by who are just trying to get from one place to another without running over these clueless assholes. They are so self-absorbed that they don't realize they are victims of clever marketing that has them believing they need to wear spandex cycling clothing and underwear in order to ride a bicycle.

Do they allow bicycles over there?
