Winner of $590M Powerball jackpot is 84-year-old

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The winner of last month's $590 million Powerball jackpot is an 84-year-old woman from Zephyrhills, Fla.
Florida Lottery officials made the announcement Wednesday after Gloria C. Mackenzie came forward to claim the prize. They say Mackenzie took the single lump-sum payment of about $370.9 million before taxes.
Officials say she is the largest sole lottery winner in U.S. history. She did not speak to reporters outside lottery headquarters, leaving in a silver Ford Focus with family members.
The winning ticket was sold at a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills, a town of about 13,300 people located 30 miles northeast of Tampa. It is best known for bottled spring water that bears its name.
The winner had 60 days from the May 18 drawing to claim the lump sum.

How lucky I am that I just happen to be Auntie G's financial adviser with power of attorney for all financial and health decisions.
I just signed a release to allow her to take 5 milligrams of Lorazepam three times daily and I set up a trust for her.

She said she was getting married next week and wanted to protect her assets from potential goldiggers.

Re: My "Auntie" Just Won It BIG!
Here's a good reason for never doing anything nice for old people:
Powerball Lottery Winner Gloria C. Mackenzie Credits Mindy Crandell - Woman Who Let Her Cut In Line
Gloria Mackenzie, the Florida woman who won the $590.5 million Powerball jackpot, did not forget to thank another woman’s act of courtesy while claiming her prize.
[Gee that was lovely of her...let's see, 590 mil total prize, 350 mil lump sum, 250 mil free and clear after taxes...wouldn't have a penny of it if she hadn't let you cut in line...seems like 25 mil would have been an appropriate act of "courtesy", at the least...]
Mindy Crandell, the woman who let Mackenzie buy the ticket ahead of her, said she has no regrets that her generous action cost her a fortune, telling ABC News that “things are meant to be for a reason.” [Well perhaps it's best this woman didn't get any of the money...she obviously has a drug problem...]
Crandell explained that despite Mackenzie cutting in line, she was given an opportunity to reclaim her original spot by the lady at the counter. But, the 34-year-old Crandell refused the offer and since then has been teased by family and friends for giving away the chance to win the lottery.][Teased? How does tormented relentlessly to the end of your days sound?]
"The joke was, that's the lady that's going to win it. I was like, 'Yeah right. No one is going to win from little Zephyrhills,'" Crandell said.
Crandell, who was accompanied by her 10-year-old daughter at the Publix supermarket, said she holds no ill-will towards Mackenzie. Instead, she hoped the money would bless her family.
Crandell added that this incident has helped her instill good values in her daughter. “It could have been us, but things happen. Sometimes it's better to be patient than rich. I knew we were teaching our daughter the right thing," she said.
Mackenzie, winner of the largest undivided lottery prize in history, has not revealed what she would do with the money. She opted for a one-time lump sum amount of $370.9 million before taxes, passing on the opportunity for a bigger payout spread over 30 years.[Gee, at 84, I find that shocking...]
“We are grateful for this blessing of winning the Florida Lottery Powerball jackpot and appreciate the interest of the public, the state of Florida and the lottery. We hope that everyone will give us the opportunity to maintain our privacy for our family's benefit," Mackenzie said in a statement.

Re: My "Auntie" Just Won It BIG!
It would be a nice gesture if Gloria C. Mackenzie gives Mindy Crandell a few dollars.
I wonder if she will?

Generosity?

Something along the lines of 25 million dollars would seem appropriate...

Fat chance, she doesn't look like the generous type.

Re: My "Auntie" Just Won It BIG!
I have to say, I stand absolutely impressed by Ms. Cradall's attitude about this..
Her attitude borders on the Christ like:
These people are beyond decent....they're saint like...
"You just cleared 250 million dollars by my letting you cut in front of me? Is 25 million dollars so unreasonable?"
Words fail me...

Re: My "Auntie" Just Won It BIG!
I'm sorry, but if I let some one cut in front of me, (and it could be proved I did that) and because of that they won the biggest Lotto of all time, and they didn't want to share the profit, I would bring the biggest lawsuit of all time...

Re: My "Auntie" Just Won It BIG!
Why would a place in a line affect a lottery ticket?
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
Re: My "Auntie" Just Won It BIG!
Something that has been left out of most reports of this story is -
"According to lottery spokesman David Bishop, their chance encounter didn't cheat Crandell out of the fortune.
"Each lottery terminal has its own random number generator and there are a lot of factors," he said. "If there was even a millisecond difference in the time between key strokes at the terminal, it would have changed the numbers."
Should the lady still get a couple million for her courteous gesture?
Maybe...

I'll have to write a letter to my "auntie" getting her to send a double saw buck to Ms. Crandell as a nice gesture.
