Going to see Star Trek Into Darkness This evening...

On a "date" with my daughter...(My first choice was After Earth, her first choice was The Great Gatsby, so we compromised on this... )

I was surprised by the fact that I didn't throw up when I saw the first "Star Trek 90210" re-imagining of the original Star Trek... (Except for that bit where Spock was eating face publicly with Ohura in the transporter room...that was so un-Spock... )

It was nowhere near as bad as I expected it to be...

Has anyone here seen this second installment?

BTW, the reason I put the kabosh on The Great Gatsby, is having fought my way through the book in high school, and having seen the original film with Robert Redford, I know it's basically a "romance" movie....

As I explained to Tati:

"You know how I feel about romance movies sweetheart...'

"Exactly. From the reviews, it looks like an excellent film, but it's something you should go to see with your mother, or your aunt, or your girlfriends...I'm gonna take a pass on that one..."

Strongly suspect JJ Abrahms was beaten up by Trekkies in his youth and this film was a giant fuck you revenge.

Please don't get me started I haven't calmed down enough yet - and I saw it almost a month ago now.

RB, is there something you found specifiably objectionable about this flick in particular, (as opposed to the whole "let's re-imagine the crew of the original Enterprise as 20 somethings" concept, which I grant you is inherently objectionable..).or this just an ongoing objection to the concept? (Which would be entirely understandable...)

Not harsh enough .... my blood pressure seriously spikes whenever I even start to think of writing what I think about the film ... as I said its been almost a month and I'm still not capable of writing a review that doesn't turn into a red raged rant littered with expletives.

RB, I admit I didn't like the whole re-imagining concept...

If I had been casting a re-make of the original Star Trek, I wouldn't have gone with the 20 something concept...

I think Michael Weatherly ("Tony DiNozzo" from NCIS) would have made a great Captain Kirk...



He was the right age and had that mix of super serious scenery chewer and campy swash buckler that would have made him a great replacement for Shatner...

But they decided instead to go with a 20 something version, and I have to say while that's not the way I would have done it, I wasn't as appalled as I expected to be...

(But then maybe my standards are lower than some; I'm a big fan of StarTrek Enterprise, and I get a lot of grief from "purists" about that.... )

I liked it... I found it easy to accept the re-imagining of the Star Trek genre. The "young" cast aren't really that young though Chris Pine is 32, Zachary Quinto is 36, and Karl Urban is 40. Not much difference in age as The Original Series cast were back in 1966.

I thought BC was a fab villain, he has a menace in those cold eyes.

I have to seriously suspend my belief with the Spock/Uhura thing though - that's the only bad thing about the re-imagining in my eyes.

You know Daze, you're right, they're not as young as I thought they were... (Shatner and Nimoy were in their early-mid 30's when they played the roles originally) but for some reason these two look like teenagers compared to the originals:




Shatner was 35 in 1966, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Shatner) which makes him just 3 years older than Pine, but Shatner looks his age, and Pine looks 10 years younger....

Same thing with Nimoy and Quinto... ( Like Shatner, Nimoy was also born in 1931, making him 35 in 1966, the exact same age as Quinto is now, (born in 1977)

But man, he sure doesn't look it....

He looks 19....

Maybe since we all look younger then our parents did at the same age, 35 is the new 19....

Lynn and I took four of the Bolokanang girls to see it yesterday (two birthday girls and their two invited 'guests') - they chose Star Trek over whatever else was playing.

I still don't know whether I liked it or not. It seemed OK to me for most of the movie that this was a re-envision of Star Trek with different actors. But then (spoiler?) New Spock speaks to Old Spock (Nimoy as 'dad') - and Old Spock confirms that Khan was their most formidable foe in the past.

So that means that New Spock, New Kirk, New McCoy, New Uhuru, New Scotty are ALL the children of the old ones - and what a monumental coincidence that they should each have exactly the same roles as their parents...... and be on the Enterprise which seemed not be very 'New' at all. It just doesn't compute.

Here's what Barry Ronge said in the Sunday Times here today:

The star of this show is Benedict Cumberbatch. His character-shading is precise and his skill casts a shadow on Chris Pine, who looks and acts like a California beach boy, and that’s not really the kind of hero you need in deep space.

He's nailed that. BC is great within the limits of what he was given; Chris Pine is just a jerk (character wise)

In the 2009 film we discover Spock Prime (Nimoy). He is from The Original Series timeline, he is stranded in the reboot timeline by the Romulan Nero. So Spock Prime has all his memories from the other timeline, and Spock Quinto uses him for advice in Into Darkness.

And heres a very good example of just one of the things that really grated on me with this film ... why did Spock lite need to contact original Spock? ITS A DIFFERENT BLOODY TIME LINE!!! anything original Spock knew about Khan he knew about original Khan in the original time line NOT Khan 2.0 and since the timelines split long before Khan 2.0 shows up in the alternate timeline then Khan 2.0 is a completely different fucking Khan with a completely different fucking history!!! Similarily Original Spock advising Spock lite to make friends with Kirk lite was a waste of fucking time and highly illogical since that too is a different bloody Kirk to the one original Spock knows also with a completely different history so for all original Spock knows Kirk lite is a complete knob head (which is exactly how they wrote him in this crappy movie) who Spock lite would do better having nothing to do with.
