OAKLAND -- The impact of a sellout crowd during the A's 10-2 victory over Seattle Sunday was apparently too much for the Coliseum's aging drainage system, as flushing toilets resulted in a flood of water and raw sewage in both teams' clubhouses as well the umpires' dressing room.
Showers in the stadium's lowest level, where the clubhouses are located, began oozing water and sewage shortly after the game began, according to A's equipment manager Steve Vucinich, who said he'd never seen such an event in his 46 years working at the stadium, which opened in 1968.
Both the A's and Mariners had to leave their clubhouses and shower in the Raiders' locker room, which is located one level above the baseball clubhouses, after the game.
The extent of the damage wasn't immediately known, but Vucinich said it was likely that the carpet in the A's clubhouse would have to be ripped out and replaced while the A's are on a seven-game road trip, which starts Monday in Texas.
Oakland drew a crowd of 36,067 Sunday.
