Nature is Wonderful

Post by oldr_n_wsr »

This spring we were treated to a mama and papa robins building a nest in the bush at the end of our driveway. Mama laid four eggs and sat on them all the time. Well not all the time as on some hot days she went on to the wire above the bush and watched. If we got close (as we had to do as it was near the gate that opened out to the road) she would chirp and squawk and make a racket trying to get us away from the nest.

Then the eggs hatched and four little robbins with closed eyes were lying in the nest. An boy did they grow quick. Seems like in no time they were chirping for food and before they were even big enough to hold onto a branch on their own, they looked too big for the nest, especially four of them. But in the nest they all stayed. All this while whenever we went to open the gate to leave or get the newspaper or just walk down the driveway, mama robin, now joined by papa robin would fly around and dive bomb us and try to get us away from the nest. My dog Apollo thought they were playing with him and he would sit at the end of the driveway and when they flew at him he would run and jump after them. The end of the driveway where the bush was I ended up having to put some fencing as Apollo was tearing up the little garden and flowers planted there.

The babies grew and one day all four were out of the nest each on their own branch. Apollo was kept inside mostly as we didn't want him grabbing a baby if one should try and fly off a branch and not be ready. There was a day when he was sitting on the front stoop and he was eyeing something in the big garden in front of the house. My wife went out and saw one of the babies hiding under one of the plants. All of a suddon Apollo jumped up and dove into the garden The baby robin learned to fly very quickley and made his (her?) exit. That was the last we saw of them. The other three were no longer on their branches and mom and dad were no longer on the wires watching over the kids.

Now we have a bird living in a hanging basket that is near our back door. I don't know what kind of bird it is. It is a little bigger than a common sparrow and it's feathers are a little lighter. Also it's beak is longer and pointier with a slight downward arc to it. I don't think there is a nest in the basket as I have looked in and only saw a spot it has carved into the soil. My wife says she has seen two of the birds go in there, but every time I check, only one flies out and I see no eggs nor the twigs usually used to make a nest. I think it's just his (her?) roosting spot.We shall see.

And to top it all off, now we have a bunch of black swallowtail caterpillars eating the parsley plants. Blask swallowtails lay their egs on parsley plants and they hatch and the caterpillars don't need to search for food, they love parsley. We had ten such caterpillars last year but only one survived to make it to a butterfly. My wife was not happy last year as I would not let her cut the parsley off the plant to use in her cooking. This year we bought two plants so she can use one and the caterpillars can pig out on the other. OF course mommy butterfly laid eggs on both plants and both plants have about 15 caterpillars each. They are the size (and look just like) mouse turds only with a faint green stripe about midway across their back. In two weeks they will be about two inches long and be ready to chrysalis. When they get a little larger, I'm going to pick the caterpillars off one of the parsley plants and put them onto the other. This way my wife will be able to use the other one for cooking. The caterpillars will get the larger plant. ;)

I need to put up some kindof screening as when they get bigger, the birds can sot them and come and get them. Especially when they are moving to find a place to chrysalis. Also, they need to hang at about a 45 degree angle to verticle otherwise they die. We had one 90 degree to verticle (basically horizontal) and it never came out of it's cocoon. Need to put in a bunch of sticks they can chrysalis on.

I don't think there is a nest in the basket
I am wrong, there is a nest with more than one baby bird in it. On saturday I waited til the parent left and got a good look inside the basket under the flowers. There is a kind of tunnel and at the bottom of the tunnel I saw these shut eyes staring(?) at me. There was more fuzz than one baby bird has but I could not discern how many were in there. Mama is constantly going out then coming back with a bug in her beak. She lands on the railing then hops up to the basket. Few minutes later out she goes again. And pop is up in the tree constantly chirping. My neighbor has a bird book, I need to find out what kind they are.

And the caterpillars are about 1/4 inch lng now and have a single whitish/greenish band/saddle in the middle of their bodies. Counted about 20 so far.

Did anyone besides me misread that as "moose turds"? :o

Over twenty caterpillars ranging in size from 3/4 inch to 1 1/4 inches. Tha larger ones are greenish yellow with black stripes. I think we might need more parsely.

And the birds are Carolina Wrens. I think there are three babies, although there is one who is always front and center when I look in. Mom and dad are very vocal but no dive bombing like the robins.

The caterpillars were taking a break from eating this weekend (heat related?). Also we are down to 10 of them. Don't know what happened to the rest. None seemed large enough to go to crysallis yet but I searched the areacto make sure. Birds maybe. Pue some sticks poking out of the dirt where they can cacoon on. According to the website I linked it's about two weeks from hatch to crysallis, so towards the end of hte week they shoudl be ready to turn.

And there are 3 baby Carolina wrens. Got a pretty good glimpse of them over the weekend.
I sit in my driveway or garage and watch the parents shuttle bugs in their mouths to the babies. Careful parents to not tip-off where the nest is. They don't just fly onto the hanging basket. First they will land on the ground many feet away from the nest. then they take a secluded route to the step railing then quickly jump into the hanging basket all the time constantly looking around making sure they were not followed. Their secluded routes are from the patio bar to the ground to behind the gutter drainpipe, continuing on the ground against hte foundation, behind the grill and behind the spare propane tank to under the steps, out the other side of the steps and on to the landing then finally up to the step rail and basket. Another route is to land on the driveway, hop between teh grabage pails and the foundation, behind the propane tank (tank for stove) behind the paper recycling pail, behind the plastics/glass recycling pail, up to teh step landing, up to the railing and up to the basket.

Any movement by anyone or anything during these journey's will cause them to fly away up into a neighbors oak tree (over loking my back door where the hanging basket is) where it will start chirping up a storm.

Also saw one of the parents come out of the basket with something white in it's beak and drop it on the driveway. I went to check it out thinking maybe it was a piece of an eggshell. Turned out to be bird poop. Along with being "skittish" they are neat freaks too.

You should set up a webcam on the nests O-n-W!

First I would need a cam, then I would have to turn on the computer at home. Then I would have to hook the two together, then.......

I'll try and get pictures and email them to you. The wrens are pretty skittish.

Did a headcount and we are down to 10 caterpillars. Put a bunch of sticks in the parsley pots hoping to give them a place to cocoon.

Down to 5 caterpillars and one has crawled on the foundation hopefully to go to cocoon. Almost no parsley left. Hope the others follow and get cocoonning.

Only three left as of last night. The foundation guy disapeared as did another. Don't know where they are going to but I hope they make to to butterfly-dom.

The baby wrens flew the basket yesterday afternoon. I was going into the house and the mom was chirping and all of sudden this little bird attempted to fly out of the basket. It landed on the lace hanging down then fluttered to the ground. It was followed by three more little birds. Mom was flying all around rounding them up. They babies fluttered/walked/hopped their way to a big bush in the back of the yard. Take care wrens, hope you nest again nearby next year.

We got some pictures of the babies fluttering and hopping (and me holding one). I'll try and download them to my computer and then email them to gob and he can post them here. (if he wants)

Gotta put them on the computer then I'll email them to you. We're down to one caterpillar. I put the parsley plant in a bucket with a screen over the top. It's still there and still eating. I'll get some pictures of it also.

The last caterpillar died. Don't know why. No black swallowtails this year. Hope some of those that disappeared made it to coccoons and eventual butterflies.

Got some more black swallowtail caterpillars on the parsley. WOOOO HOOOOO. Takes about 2 weeks to grow to size then I think it's a week in the cocoon. Don't know if they have enough time to transform before colder weather comes. Although it's 95 and hazy hot and huid today.I read somewhere that sometimes they cocoon and go dormant and spend the winter in the cocoon only to emerge in the spring.

Didn't get any pictures of the new batch yet. And I can't find them now. Hopefully they are just down near the bottom of the bush/plant. They are really small, smaller than a mouse turd and similar in color but with a yellow/greenish band across their body. I have to see if we have pictures of the last batch. If I find any I'll send them to Gob to see if he can post them. I play the luddite and have no file sharing/picture sharing sites that I visit/belong to. ;)
