Australia could soon welcome its first openly gay US Ambassador after John Berry got the nod for the position.
US President Barack Obama announced Mr Berry’s nomination as one of 15 key administration posts last week.
The news has been welcomed by a variety of gay and lesbian organisations and news services in the US, which have described the former director of the Office of Personnel Management as instrumental in anti-discrimination movements.
US website Washington Blade said prior to his departure from the OPM, Mr Berry was considered the highest-ranking openly gay person within the Obama administration.
In a White House statement, Mr Obama highlighted the knowledge and dedication of the nominees.
“I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come,” he said.
Mr Berry’s nomination is subject to confirmation by the Senate.
The current US ambassador to Australia is Jeffrey Bleich.

NO!! Don't change it!
I just wanted you to know I was the first to post it, (American version) - and I thought I made it up.
And also I posted it because you always seem to post things before I do and in my little pea brain I just wanted credit for beating you to it...
That's it. I won't comment on it anymore....

Mr Abbott, (our recently elected Prime Minister,) said he would “probably feel a bit threatened … as most people do” when asked how he felt about homosexuality.

John Berry looks disturbingly similar to Ronald Reagan. Also, those khakis might as well be mom jeans; he has to stop dressing like a department manager at an electronics store. Judging from his fashion sense, I'm not sure he's actually gay.
Gawd what a twit. I hope that at the next state function, John Berry stands reeeeeeally close to him and sniffs his neck.Gob wrote:Mr Abbott, (our recently elected Prime Minister,) said he would “probably feel a bit threatened … as most people do” when asked how he felt about homosexuality.

He'll feel at home in Canberra...
New same-sex marriage laws will be put to the ACT parliament this week but constitutional experts warn the legislation may not supersede commonwealth laws.
The territory's minority Labor government will present its Marriage Equality Bill to the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
The legislation applies to people - that is, same-sex couples - who can't legally wed under the commonwealth Marriage Act.
Attorney-General Simon Corbell believes the ACT laws can withstand a High Court challenge because the commonwealth act defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
This means there's space for states and territories to legislate to allow same-sex couples to wed because the federal law wouldn't apply to them, he argues.
Mr Corbell also points to legal advice provided to the ACT government in 2008, relating to its 2006 same-sex civil unions bill, supporting this stance.
"The same legal principles apply and that's why we've made that opinion public," he told AAP on Monday.
"But we have also undertaken further analysis by the ACT Solicitor-General in coming to our decision."
University of Sydney constitutional law expert Helen Irving says the stronger argument is that the commonwealth law is intended to cover all kinds of marriage.
"When you have an act called the Marriage Act and it defines marriage as a certain type of union, that's what marriage legally means," she told AAP.
"It's not an act that's called the Heterosexual Marriage Act, which allows there to be the Same Sex Marriage Act and other types of marriage conceivably."
While Professor Irving would be happy to see same-sex marriage laws, she didn't believe it could happen unless the federal law was also changed.
There was also a risk federal parliament could vote to overturn the ACT laws.

Soon, I’ll post my farewell message. The end is starting to get close. There are many misconceptions about me, and before I go, to live with my ancestors on the steppes, I want to set the record straight.
