With hundreds of pubs closing down every week in the UK its likely that many of these brilliant old names may vanish.
Wetherspoons Pub Group have saved a number of pubs and created a good few more, despite some brewers and landlords claiming that their prices have driven them out of business. In reality bad food, bad beer, dirty facilities, the recession and the smoking ban did more damage than anything else.
Wetherspoons pubs have sympathy with local history, our nearest one is called "Shay Wake" named in dialect after the mill workers annual holiday Shaw Wakes Week. Inside there are tributes to the local cotton mills and a clockwork art piece made from parts of a spinning machine. It serves great real ale from a number of local breweries, serves a simple menu, and above all is clean. Given that this has opened on a crossroads where there are three other pubs that you think might now be be struggling - in fact they are busier than ever and have (to a degree) cleaned themselves up from the grotty states they had become.
