Whatcha Doin' this Labor Day Lord Jim?

New east span of Bay Bridge set to open Sept. 3

John Wildermuth

Updated 12:04 pm, Thursday, August 15, 2013

(08-15) 12:01 PDT Oakland -- The new east span of the Bay Bridge will open Sept. 3 an oversight committee decided Thursday morning, a decision that will require the bridge to close the evening of Aug. 28 so crews can make last-minute changes in time for the Tuesday morning commute.

The move came after federal officials gave their approval for a temporary plan to fix snapped high-strength steel rods that hold seismic stability structures together.

Thursday's decision came after an oversight panel made up of the top executives of the Bay Area Toll Authority, Caltrans and the California Transportation Commission spent the past few months flip flopping on a fix and an opening date for the $6.4 billion span - first saying a fix would push the opening until December and then another panel coming up with a quick solution now endorsed by federal officials.

Will you be motoring east towards Oakland on the new span, Jim?

Or will you stubbornly hold tradition and continue to use the canteliver section?

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

This Labor Day weekend, the Bay Bridge will be closed to take the original East Span out of service and to open the new East Span to traffic. Work will be done at the east (Oakland Touchdown) and west (Yerba Buena Island Transition Structure) ends of the new bridge to connect it to the existing Toll Plaza and Yerba Buena Island, respectively. Crews will also perform essential construction activities, including paving, striping and erecting barrier rail. Throughout the closure, maintenance will work on the West Span, replacing lighting fixtures, cleaning and painting the cable, and repairing finger joints.
While the Bay Bridge was closed during Labor Day weekends in 2006, 2007 and 2009, essential construction work was successfully completed on schedule. Taking advantage of historically light traffic on the bridge during the holiday weekend helps minimize disruptions to motorists, residents and businesses. Experience gained from previous closures will help us perform this construction safely again this year.
We will be expecting you to post photos of the Liz Warren bumper sticker on your car, and you standing next to it in the Cowboys gear.

Okay, let me make my position very clear here...

I am reneging on my promise...and I'm good with that... 8-)

I will not put a (lord give me strength) Elizabeth Warren bumper stripper on my car, or wear a Dallas Cowboy sweat shirt.....

I should rather die... 8-)

I'm shocked! :o

I never would have pegged you as a renegger. :?

But then again that bumper sticker and windbreaker may have caused some serious damage to your fragile ego.... 8-)

Hey, at least I'm openly admitting that I'm going to man up and do what I said I would...

(Unlike one fellow I know who just slithers away, whenever similarly challenged... 8-))
