Lord Jim wrote:I had a feeling when they dumped Gillard, that even though Rudd seemed relatively popular at the time, that there was a limit to how many times the electorate would allow a party to swap out its leader right before election time in a transparently cynical attempt to cling to power without punishing them for it.

Of course if they'd stuck with Gillard, they'd have probably lost even bigger. Her attempt to win popularity by dividing the electorate on gender lines completely blew up in her face. The Prime Minister of the country trying to portray themselves as a victim of workplace harassment did not present a compelling picture; it just diminished her, and made her look like she wasn't ready to play in the big leagues....
Fair appraisal there Jim.

Someone more knowledgeable may correct me on this but I'm pretty sure that the actual act of casting a vote is not compulsory here. What is compulsory however is registering at a polling station on Election Day. After that, you are quite welcome to wipe your arse with the ballot paper if you so desire... before you stuff yourself with snags and lamingtons.
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

That's right Sean, to quote a well known blog;
Yep, though voting is not compulsory here, turning up at the voting booth and having your name crossed of the register is. But who is going to turn up, wait hours in the bloody long queues, and then just not bother? Well lots of people actually.

It’s called “informal voting” for some strange reason, people turn up, queue, and when they get their voting card take it to a booth, either do not mark it at all, or draw a big cock on it, or write something rude about politicians on it, and drop it in the ballot box.

The most damning insult yet?
Meanwhile, columnist Tim Stanley proclaimed Mr Abbott's victory a "win for the Christian conservatives" in the UK's Daily Telegraph.

"Whereas some Western conservatives seem to be entirely motivated by the desire to win (Romney, Cameron), Abbott has a philosophy and – almost unique in our materialist age – a theology," he wrote.

"This puts him in the George W Bush, Stephen Harper compassionate conservative tradition – the tradition that tends to attract the most votes."

Well, Gob, I guess you can always get rid of Abbott mid-term with another one of those odd "party-room ballots." Regardless what Rudd says now I'll bet he can be talked into starring in yet another sequel. Politicians rarely understand the meaning of defeat.
