Last night was beyond my wildest expectations, but I hardly expect the Cards to melt down like that again. Still, it's always good to get the first game into your win column!

Well, last night's (baseball) game was certainly exciting. I have to admit I've always had a soft spot for the Cardinals. I hope this Series goes to 7.

I'm guessing 6 games. Peavy is a surprise stud Saturday night, and then Lester wins Game 5 in a tight one. Sox then take one of the last 2 in Boston (maybe it goes 7, but I'm hoping not).

The funniest moment so far has to be that play from Game One where a short pop up falls between the Cardinals pitcher and the catcher as they both just stand there flat footed looking at each other...

That pretty well symbolized the Card's performance in Game One...

When two players have a chance to make a play on a fly ball, one of them yelling "I've got it" and waving the other one off, precisely so this sort of thing doesn't happen, is something that most baseball players learn in Little League...

That the starting pitcher and catcher for the MLB National league Champions playing in the World Series wouldn't have the protocols for this worked out, is a little puzzling...

(I imagine that in most cases like this it would be the catcher who would be the primary person expected to make the catch, and the pitcher who would be the one to back off, since the catcher gets a lot more practice handling these kinds of pop-ups...)

The general rule is that you never want a pitcher to field the ball (unless it comes right at him), or throw the ball (unless its over the plate) because that is just not what they do on a daily basis, and are seriously error prone. See, e.g., Breslow, game 2, the throw that gave the game away . . . .

Hoping both teams pull it together for the weekend, Sox had their bad moments last night, and in a World Series, you know that stuff just changes the tenor of the game.

Plus, for all his protestations of his lack of interest, LJ decided to watch at least some of the Series -- perhaps inspired by this thread and his sorrow over Meade's lack of patriotic baseball fervor.

There was no grease, it was rosin -- something all pitchers are allowed to utilize. Neither the Cards nor MLB had any reason to doubt that it was rosin, or any desire to make it something it wasn't.

I know and there is generally a rosin bag on the hill. I was just being off the cuff because he put it inside his glove. I mean there are so many pitchers brushing their hair back and touching their sweating faces or licking their fingers who cares anymore? So why try to LOOK sneaky?

Just to add so nobody thinks I'm trying to make it an issue, just sayin:

St. Louis manager Mike Matheny reiterated that the accusation did not come from his dugout and said he had no issue with the assertion that it was only rosin.

You called it "grease" which is an illegal substance, so it seems quite clear you were making an issue out of it.

And it wasn't "sneaky" -- another word that creates the appearance of an "issue." If you had listened to John Farrell you would have heard him say that Lester *always* puts his rosin in that spot on his glove, and that every pitcher does it differently (Lackey puts in on his arm). Why change what works, especially in a sport that bows to superstition as much as baseball.
