Here's One Wicked Witch Who's Just Begging To Have...

her house egged and her trees TP'd...
N.D. woman to hand out "fat letters" to obese kids during Halloween

Most children expect to get candy when they go trick-or-treating. But, if they stop by one Fargo, North Dakota woman's house, they might get an unexpected "fat letter."

A station manager told valleynewslive.com in Fargo that a woman identified as Cheryl called into the Y-94 morning program saying that she wanted to make a stand against obesity during Halloween. Her idea? Give children who had extra pounds on them a letter instead of a sweet treat.

"You (sic) child is, in my opinion, moderately obese and should not be consuming sugar treats to the extent of some children this Halloween season," the letter reads. "My hope is that you will step up as an adult and ration candy this Halloween and not allow your child to continue these unhealthy eating habits."

Cheryl explained that she just wanted to send a message to the parents that their children had weight issues.

"I think it's just really irresponsible of parents to send them out looking for free candy just 'cause all the other kids are doing it,"
she said during the interview.

Some California and Massachusetts schools [surprise surprise] have also been accused of sending "fat letters" home with students. These notes include scores of a child's mass index (BMI), a height-to-weight ratio that is used by medical professionals to designate if a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. Other letters directly address if a child is overweight and obese, and include recommendations on how to help the child lose weight.

The practice has been discontinued in Mass. because of fears that the letters may cause self-esteem and bullying issues.

North Dakota State University assistant professor of clinical psychology Dr. Katie Gordon told valleynewslive.com that the unsolicited fat letters could cause emotional problems for these kids instead of helping them with their weight issues. [Gee, ya think?]She said that having an overweight or obese child should be a matter between the child's pediatrician and parents.[Wow, now there's a concept]

"That's not something that someone can judge -- the health of someone -- just by looking at them," Gordon said. "I think that's the main thing. Even if a child is overweight, they might be very healthy because of what they eat and how they exercise. It's ineffective anyway because it's not likely to help the kid."

Neither of my kids have weight issues, but I think this is absolutely appalling...

And I generally don't inject politics into this kind of story, but I'm sorry...

This is the kind of boorish, arrogant, presumptuous, condescending, in-your-face, "I know how to raise your kids better than you do" crapola that could only come from a liberal... 8-)

I'm certainly not saying that all liberals would approve of this, (presumably most liberals with an IQ above room temperature wouldn't) but this is the sort of "idea" that gets cooked up by particularly stupid liberals...

I don't quite buy it only coming from liberals, plenty of right wing assholes might well do the same thing (after all, being fit is an obligation to help fight the good fight). If her house is egged, TP'd, or maybe tubs of lard are dumped in front of it, she's asking for it.

As for the schools, as long as it is done by a qualified medical professional and in a confidential way, I see no problem with the school identifying a medical issue of a student to his or her parents. When I was in school, we had periodic physicals, and annual eye, ear, and dental screenings, and letter were sent to the parents if you showed a problem (like needing glasses, or a hearing aid, or showed signs of scoliosis, etc.). Recommendations to contact a pediatrician to follow up on obesity issues are pretty much the same IMHO.

I had a flock of great- aunts who were richer and freer with pithy advice and pointed personal commentary than that. I didn't know that everyone was not blessed with relatives armed with the kind of practical and moral certainty that flows from that old-time-religion and which they will share with you in a Niagara of education and correction.

My male relatives were all of the liveandletlive variety but it wore them down and few outlived their wives.

I think this kind of experience is enriching for children. Teaches them to stand up for themselves and not mollify cranks.

Is it even possible that a fat kid doesn't know that s/he's overweight? Do they need to be reminded?

Is it even possible that some vacuous letter from a school nurse is going to cause a kid to change his or her eating habits? We all know people in their 70's (and even beyond) who are morbidly obese, and have been competely aware of their problem (TOO MUCH FOOD) for decades, and yet have never done anything about it.

Give the kids some candy and STFU. If you don't want to give them candy, use your imagination and give them something tasty that is also a bit nutritious. A granola bar or something.

A kid? No; but some parents need to be reminded of the health problems obesity can bring, as well as to be reminded that their child is not just pleasingly plump but seriously obese. If they choose to do nothing after that, fine; the health effects are neither predestined (hence your morbidly obese people in their 70s and older) nor likely to occur in the near future, but the health professional has done his or her job in providing the warning (just as they do when a vision, hearing, or other physical problem is noticed); otherwise, why even have school nurses or physicians? Do you really see a problem with this?

But as for the original post, this woman should remember the adage, if I want your opinion I'll ask you for it. Some idiots think they have a right to say whatever they want at any time to anyone. I recall when I was in my teens I had bad acne, and I would many times have (possibly well meaning) strangers stop me and tell me about their "cures" for controlling it; at first I listened quietly, but then became quite sarcastic when I got the unsolicited advice (I remember asking one guy if he ever considered plastic surgery for all his facial scars, and asked one overweight woman if she ever considered weight watchers; they deserved it.

Nagging works. Kaiser Health Plan proved it with science:

http://benton.org/node/25400
Source: San Francisco Chronicle
Author: Victoria Colliver

Kaiser Permanente researchers conducting a clinical trial on the impact of e-mailed reminders on diet and physical activity found gentle electronic nagging actually worked: People who received regular messages suggesting modest lifestyle improvements increased their activity level and made healthier food choices. The study, conducted in 2006 and published this week in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, is considered the first randomized, controlled study to look at the effect of e-mail on health. The results showed trial participants who received regular e-mails recommending small health goals - such as a 10-minute walk - increased activity by 55 minutes per week and decreased sedentary activity by two hours a week, as compared with those who only received one message at the onset of the study.
