Indiana battered by tornadoes, damaging winds Sunday

Significant severe weather sweeps state

INDIANAPOLIS - 3:48 p.m.: Tornado warning for Boone, Clinton, Hamilton, Tipton until 4:15 p.m.

3:34 p.m.: Blackford, Grant, Huntington, Miami, Wabash counties until 4:15 p.m.

3:27 p.m.: Confirmed tornado 7 miles southwest of Kokomo. Tornado warning for Boone, Clinton, Hendricks, Fountain, Montgomery, Parke, Putnam counties until 4 p.m.

3:08 p.m.: Confirmed tornado reported between Vincennes and Decker, Ind.

2:30 p.m.: A confirmed tornado located near Covington, Ind., moving NE at 75mph.

A tornado watch is now in effect for most of Indiana until 8 p.m.

A very serious severe weather situation is setting up across Indiana on Sunday, with the possibility of multiple strong tornadoes and widespread damaging winds.

The first severe weather watch of the morning was issued about 9:30 a.m. It includes parts of northwestern Indiana in the Chicago area. Another tornado watch was issued before 11:30 a.m. for most of the rest of the state.

Supercell thunderstorms are forming in central and eastern Illinois. They will move into Indiana shortly thereafter.

The severe weather threat will persist from around noon toward the evening, when a cold front will move through, ending the threat from west to east.

"We've got two potential waves of severe weather. The first would be individual storms, potentially supercells with the greatest risk of producing damaging wind and tornadoes," StormTeam 6 Chief Meteorologist Kevin Gregory said. "Tornadoes and damaging wind are also possible along a squall line expected later in the day."

There is the potential for multiple strong tornadoes and wind damage that could affect a large part of the state.

Outside of the high risk zone, the entire state is in a moderate risk area for severe weather.

The National Weather Service issued a strongly worded outlook Sunday morning that said conditions "will be favorable for strong tornadoes with several long-track damaging tornadoes expected to occur from eastern Illinois … across much of western and central Indiana."

I am south of Indy in a small sliver of sunshine. Just spoke with husband who claims to have just had the scariest drive of his life on I465. He is home the house is standing and the dog is hiding. Wave 2 starting. I get to drive home in wave 2 Whee!

If you're actually "experienc[ing] a tornado," there is no "place of safety." There are only places you are relatively more or less likely to survive.

I saw a funnel cloud once; did not see it touch down, not sure it ever did. Still, it was about the most terrifying experience of my life.

I was out having fun testing out my 4WD :I a storm one day. the following day I found out that a town about 20 miles south of us was hit by a tornado spawned from that same storm. Storms can be somewhat exciting tornados are terror and destruction.

Pictures of tornado damage don't do much justice to the destruction done you just don't get the feel of what was. The mind just doesn't comprehend what was. There isn't a burned out or bomed out hulk heck there really isn't even a pile of rubble just debris spread over a large area. There simply is no point of reference.

Never been close to a tornado and have no desire to get close to one either. Hurricanes and superstorms are bad enough for me.
You hunker down and hope and pray.
When it's over you go out and help those less fortunate get the immediate care they need. Then you rebuild yours and help others rebuild.
More is done by people lending their hands to others than any national disaster program can ever do.

You really believe that? From sending out the national guard, to having disaster plans and drills at hospitals, to providing grants/loans for devastating repairs, to providing emergency food and temporary housing, quite a bit is done by national disaster programs (and local ones coordinated through FEMA. Sure, people helping each other is great, and many step up; but few of us are trauma surgeons, few have the resources to help even one neighbor rebuild, let alone a whole neighborhood, few have the logistical experience to coordinate mass evacuations or bring emergency supplies to where they're needed, etc. You need a broader coordination for that, and while they system is far from perfect, IMHO it helps a lot more people over a much longer time than neighbors pitching in. Don't get me wrong; both are valuable and needed in any response to an emergency, but let's give credit where credit is due.

No one dropped a house on me thank goodness. We were quite lucky here in Indiana compared to Illinois where there was havoc and a ton of destruction. After the storm there were rainbows and double rainbows abounding and I drove home in the light of a beautiful full moon.
