6 Charts That Show How The War On Fat Was A Gigantic Mistake

The "war" on saturated fat is the biggest mistake in the history of nutrition.
As people have reduced their intake of animal fat and cholesterol, the incidence of many serious diseases has gone up. We are now in the midst of worldwide pandemics of obesity, metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes.
Studies conducted in the past few decades conclusively show that neither saturated fat nor dietary cholesterol cause harm in humans (1, 2, 3, 4). Scientists are now beginning to realize that the entire low-fat dogma was based on flawed studies that have since been thoroughly debunked.
Here are six graphs that clearly show how incredibly damaging it has been to advise people to reduce their consumption of animal fat.
1. In Europe, the Countries that Eat the Most Saturated Fat Have the Lowest Risk of Heart Disease
* * *
Have you ever heard of the "French Paradox"? * * * There is no paradox. It was a myth all along (5).
2. The Obesity Epidemic in the USA Started at Almost The Exact Same Time the Low-Fat Dietary Guidelines Were Published
* * *
3. Diets that Are High in Fat But Low in Carbohydrates Cause More Weight Loss than Diets that Are Low in Fat
* * *
4. The Diseases of Civilization Increased as Butter and Lard Were Replaced with Vegetable Oils and Trans Fats
* * *
5. The Obesity Epidemic Started as People Reduced Their Intake of Red Meat and High-Fat Dairy Products
* * *
6. In the Framingham Heart Study, Heart Disease Goes up as People Replace Heart-Healthy Butter with Toxic Margarine

Pile of crap, based on biased sampling and logical fallacies.

Re: More bacon I say
Well, yes it cherry picks, and no it is not all bullocks. Butter is better than margarine in all ways, but better to have butter in moderation. Carb heavy diets usually have too many simple carbs which will support the thesis, but its more complicated since a diet rich in complex carbs is not such a bad thing. It does seem the Atkins like thesis to eat more fatty red meat and high-fat dairy comes from fat headed thinking, when again a bit of moderation might be a better thought.
Re: More bacon I say
Butter is better than margarine, sure, but it has been decades since anyone has claimed that trans fats are healthier than naturally occurring saturated fats. Comparing heart attack risks between advanced western European countries and a group of former Soviet republics is like comparing the risk of auto accidents between Manhattan and rural Iowa. To say nothing of lumping vegetable oils in with trans fats and the post hoc reasoning.
As I said, piece of crap.
As I said, piece of crap.

Well, I'm going to believe it until I've had a few of the Burgerville bacon and blue cheese burgers; then I might reconsider.Scooter wrote: As I said, piece of crap.

In Portland we always stop for Burgers 'n Beer at McMenamins.

Re: More bacon I say
Let's be clear (and I'm not sure we have been up until now):
The insidious harm of the "low fat" campaign, was that it caused (some) people to ignore calorie content when comparing foods, and conclude that if a food was "low in fat," it was a good "diet food." They would choose "low fat" foods regardless of their calorie count, then wonder why they weren't losing weight.
Which is obviously nonsense. Calories are, basically, calories.
The Adkins Diet (and other similar programs) proved that one could load up with protein and fat, while doing no harm to your heart, and losing weight in the bargain. With his combination of foods, calories do not count.

Re: More bacon I say
No harm to your heart, short term, especially depending on what types of fats you were eating. And plenty of harm to your kidneys. But I agree about the "low fat" craze.
As Long Run said, everything in moderation. Which I'll modify to add, except sugar, especially refined sugar, which is evil.

It's a well established scientifically proven fact, that the leading cause of death is Republican Presidents...
Republican Presidents are also the leading cause of Benji Fever, Beriberi, Restless Leg Syndrome, Halitosis, the heartbreak of psoriasis, and Painful Rectal Itch*....
*okay, well the leading cause of that last one may be reading posts written by rubato, but you get the point...

Are you sure? I thought it was Christians?

More people died, (not just in the US but all over the world) when Ronald Reagan was President, then had ever died during the Administrations of any previous Presidents....
It's a verifiable fact; look it up....
In fact if you look at a simple one column table, you will find that the number of people dying rose steadily during Mr. Reagan's Presidency; more people dying in the final year of his Presidency than died in the first...
Coincidence?
I think not....

You've only touched on the tip of the iceberg, Jim. Ronald Reagan is responsible for more deaths than anyone ever in the world.Lord Jim wrote: In fact if you look at a simple one column table, you will find that the number of people dying rose steadily during Mr. Reagan's Presidency; more people dying in the final year of his Presidency than died in the first...

Let me give you a hint -
I also have evidence that proves that Ronald Reagan was paid by cigarette manufacturers to help endorse their deadly product, which he willfully and knowingly accepted.
The man was as evil as they come, Jim.
And, as the chart below shows, you supported this... this cruel and inhuman person... Ronald Reagan -
How do you sleep, Jim?
Re: More bacon I say
Not all cigarettes, just Chesterfields, and by association those made by Liggett Myers (now Altria). They were the healthy ones (I think the ones "made by tobacco men, not medicine men").
edited to add: Nope, those were Old Golds; Chesterfields were "100% pure" with "the cleanest bill of health any cigarette can rate". I guess Reagan backed the right horse, the healthy cigarettes.

Can we please get back to bacon!
One of my favorite recipes, I made it last week, and just used the carcass to make stock yesterday:
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina- ... index.html

I usually chop up the roasted bacon and toss it into whatever salad I'm making with the meal. I also try to tuck some carrots and potatoes around the roasting chicken, to catch some of the bacon/chicken/lemon/garlic goodness.
The bacon imparts a smokey quality to the chicken meat, and the whole thing is always incredibly moist and fabulous. The pan gravy is also to-die-for --- but you have to be able to appreciate the citrus quality. I love the roasted lemons, we eat those as well, sliced up with the meat and veg.
