Three members of a so-called 'Muslim Patrol' were today jailed at the Old Bailey for repeatedly trying to enforce Sharia law in East London.



Jordan Horner and another Islamic extremist told one couple they could not hold hands while walking down the street, because it was in a 'Muslim area'.

The radicals also attacked a group of men drinking in the road, and told a woman she would face 'hell fire' because of the way she was dressed.

Horner, 19, Ricardo MacFarlane, 36, and a 23-year-old man who cannot be named for legal reasons were sentenced to 68 weeks, 12 months and 24 weeks in prison respectively.

The court earlier heard that last December Horner and the 23-year-old man drove alongside Joshua Bilton and Anna Reddiford in Bethnal Green, and started yelling at them through a megaphone.

The teenage convert shouted: 'Let go of each other's hands. This is a Muslim area!' - but the couple initially assumed it was a joke.

They stopped holding hands after the men repeated the message - and when they started again, the car blocked their way until they let go.

Two weeks later, Horner and MacFarlane attacked men drinking in Shoreditch, shouting: 'Kill the non-believers.'

Horner then punched two of the group, hitting James Forward in the jaw and knocking out Patrick Kavanagh with a sucker punch to the head.

On January 13, Horner and the 23-year-old harassed another couple, Clare Coyle and Robert Gray, as they were walking in Stepney - accusing Miss Coyle of being a 'slag'.

In an exchange filmed on Horner's phone, she replied, 'This is Great Britain. I can dress how I wish,' while the group shouted: 'Remove yourselves now. Muslim Patrol. Move away from the mosque.'

Horner, an associate of hate preacher Anjem Choudary who has declared he wants to bring Sharia law to Britain, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault and two charges of using threatening words and behaviour.

He was jailed earlier this year for beating up a photographer, and has been seen putting up posters across East London 'banning' alcohol.

MacFarlane, who pleaded guilty to affray, has previous convictions for criminal damage for painting over advertisements of women in the street.

The 23 year-old admitted two counts of using threatening words and behaviour.

Prosecutor Alex Chalk told the court: 'This is a case about religious vigilantism. These men were members of a self-styled Muslim Patrol who threatened, intimidated and even assaulted members of the public who they perceived to be behaving in an un-Islamic manner.

'The men accosted members of the public in neighbourhoods of East London which they claimed were Muslim areas, and where according to them different law applied.'

Judge Rebecca Poulet QC told them: 'One of the many good things about living in Great Britain is the tolerance and respect members of the public generally show to one another's religious beliefs, his dress or his chosen way of life.

'When on occasions a person shows their intolerance of another individual whether by aggression or violence and in such a way as to cause real fear to the individual then the law can be invoked to protect that individual.

'This law would protect you if someone treated you in this way. It is the very same law that now brings you before this court for your conduct.

'My understanding is that Islam is a peaceful religion and this conduct was unfortunately anything but.'

Often they won't name a suspect if try are also remanded for other offences to prevent subjudice.

I know plenty of Muslims that condemn strongly the acts of terror committed by al Qaida, and find the behaviour of people like ginger bollocks above and the two fuckwits that hacked to death an off duty soldier utterly abhorrent and totally against what Islam stands for.

I would say the majority of Muslims would just like to live in peace and worship how they like. It's unfortunate that a few might twist the theology into suiting their own twisted ways.

Also I imagine that the native people of the Americas and Australasia thought Christians were a big bunch of terrifyingly brutal bastards when they went on their missions a couple of hundred years ago.

I know a number of Muslim small business owners that I have as clients who not only would "condemn" that sort of thing, but who have become so Americanized we do shots together...(not very good Muslims, I suppose...but even though they drink alcohol, and their kids are completely Americanized, they still pull out their prayer rugs...)

But can you imagine what would happen if a professional photographer created a Piss Mohammed?

There'd be another round of riots, and he'd have to go into hiding because there would be multiple "fatwas" on his ass...

(Hell, some of these people are so touchy, they tried to kill a guy in Denmark for drawing a cartoon...)

The long time liberal columnist Jimmy Breslin, (I've never agreed with him politically, but I saw him interviewed recently; it was nice to see that he's still kickin') once said, ( in the late 70's, shortly after the Islamist triumph in Iran):

That's a very prescient observation, but unfortunately, given the lethality of modern weaponry, and the speed of modern communications, we don't have the luxury of waiting patiently for 600 years while the Islamo-facsists catch up...

They're going to have to catch up pretty much as quickly as the Germans and Japanese (who had no previous experience with it) caught on to the organization of democratic government...

And firebombings, and assaults of cinema patrons. No, I don't equate that to flying planes into 2 skyscrapers, but let's not pretend that the "Christian" response to what is perceived as an insult to the faith has been exclusively non-violent.

It is also worth pointing out that both Nikos Kazantzakis, who wrote the book, and Martin Scorsese, who made the film, are men of faith who were creating works in celebration of that faith. That their critics chose to interpret it as blasphemy, even as they completely misrepresented the message contained therein, only goes to show that the Christian right are in the main a bunch of morons.

The claim that the film portrays Jesus having sex with Mary Magdalene and raising children being a case in point - the howlers were completely clueless that the entire sequence was a vision given to Jesus as a temptation by Satan as he was dying on the cross, i.e. a vision of the normal, happy life that Jesus could have had if only he would call on God to cancel the whole crucifixion. I can't think of a better image to contrast with the pain of dying on the cross, in order to exemplify the magnitude of the sacrifice that Jesus was making. Certainly much more finessed than Mel Gibson's antisemitic gorefest that was the darling of the Christian right.

Actually it was Andres Serrano, and those who reacted with such outrage (and demanded censorship, yet another reaction that they share with extremist Muslims, and repeatedly vandalized it) did not bother to learn that Serrano is a practicing Christian who, far from mocking Christ or religion in general, was making a statement about how modern society has received the message of Christ.
