Which brings us back to the OP - in 1954 no one thought twice about suspending disbelief enough to accept a 40 year old woman playing Peter Pan, but 50 years later it's absolutely inconceivable to some for an African-American to be cast as a nun.

THat's because Black People didn't exist in Europe until 1960.... At the earliest... Most Sources have them slowly appearing in various areas in Europe by spontaneous generation around 1975 with the exception of the former Russian Bloc and Scandinavian countries. THe former being overrun by muslims/arabs and the latter being the only remaining place in the world that is "lily white"

It's an interesting point.... how many black persons were there in pre-WW2 Austria after the Anschluss? This casting has certainly seemed to bring a lot of racists to the fore on the Interwebs.

I don't care particularly but it does seem rather odd to have a black actor or actress representing a semi-historical or historical figure in a time and place when/where that person would not have been (could not have been) black - or Chinese - or Caucasian. It's hard to imagine Robert E Lee being portrayed by Danny Glover. It would be obviously absurd to cast a Caucasian actor as a black slave in 1850s Virginia unless he/she donned "black-face" which would cause no end of trouble (now that DW is long gone anyway).

Mind you, I can also see the value in (say) an all(or almost all)-black cast (not New Zealanders although they could be) exploring the nuanaces of a work in terms of race.

FWIW I also don't like "white" Jesus Christ portrayals and would prefer a few "big noses" (M. Python).

Two questions Sean: If what you say is true how did they get to Europe and how did they avoid being absorbed in to the white population? Racial characteristic can disappear in as little as four generations. There have been blacks in Europe in the pasts brought there by the Romans and later by European slave traders, but they were absorbed into the general population.

The Sahara desert also separates black Africa form the north; it was a very effective barrier until the Arabs invented an improved saddle for camels.

FYI, take away the modern technology, in lieu camels and the Sahara is still a killer. It might make an interesting television program, similar to the amazing race, to pit teams of runners in a race across the Sahara with only the water they could carry themselves.

Rescuers have found the bodies of 92 migrants, most of them women and children, strewn across the Sahara desert in northern Niger after their vehicles broke down and they died of thirst, authorities said yesterday.
Rescue worker Almoustapha Alhacen said the bodies – 52 children, 33 women and seven men from Niger – were found on the route from the northern mining town of Arlit to the Algerian border.
Many were in an advanced state of decomposition and had been partly devoured by animals, probably jackals, he said.
Northern Niger lies on a major corridor for illegal migration and people-trafficking from sub-Saharan African into north Africa and across the Mediterranean into Europe.
Most of those who make the perilous journey on ancient opentopped trucks are young African men in search of work. Rescuers said the doomed convoy of women and children was puzzling.
“It’s the first time I’ve seen anything like it,” Alhacen told Reuters by telephone from Arlit. “It is hard to understand what these women and children were doing there.”
Rescuers found many writing slates in the luggage, suggesting the children may have been students in a Qu’ranic school being taken to Algeria, perhaps to beg, Alhacen said.
Alhacen said 19 of the group had reached Algeria by foot and were repatriated to Niger by authorities there. Two survived after walking dozens of kilometers (miles) across the burning desert back to Arlit.
The bodies of 87 of the victims were buried on Wednesday in accordance with Islamic custom, he said.
The migrants had set off in two trucks from Arlit towards Tamanrasset in Algeria sometime between late September and mid-October, officials and rescue workers said.
After one truck broke down, the second turned back to look for help but was stranded and the passengers tried to return by foot.
“The search is still going on,” the mayor of Arlit, Maouli Abdouramane, said by telephone.
