Delaware Tea Party Victory?

Post by Gob »

In Tuesday's Delaware primary, the tea party movement may inflict its most devastating wound yet to the Republican establishment.

With an assist from Sarah Palin, tea party activists in Delaware are trying to defeat the Republican candidate with the best chance to win Joe Biden's old Senate seat and nominate instead a candidate Republican leaders say has no chance of winning the general election in November.

Rep. Mike Castle is considered a slam dunk to capture Joe Biden's old Senate seat. Castle is a pro-abortion rights, pro-gun control Republican who often works with Democrats. Those traits have helped make him the most popular Republican in a state that leans heavily Democratic; Castle has twice been elected governor and was elected as Delaware's sole representative in the House nine times.

But Castle's moderate politics have enraged tea party activists and given Christine O'Donnell an opening.

O'Donnell, who has also been endorsed by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., and the NRA, called that "Republican cannibalism," which she said is an indication of just how out of touch with their voters and desperate main stream Republicans have become.

The Delaware Republican party has been issuing almost daily press releases attacking O'Donnell.

One recent release highlighted a Rasmussen poll showing Castle carrying a double-digit lead over Democrat Chris Coons in the general Senate race, 48 percent to 37 percent. When Coons and O'Donnell are matched up, Coons leads O'Donnell by a 47 percent to 36 percent margin.

O'Donnell said she remains confident that voters see her as the real Republican choice.

"There's a tidal wave coming here in Delaware and my campaign is riding it," she said. "My opponent is drowning in it."

This would be a catastrophe... We need to win Delaware to have any chance of taking the Senate, and Castle would win it easily....

O'Donnel has lost two state wide races, (the last time to Biden for the Senate, 65% to 35%) and is almost a sure loser...

If we fail to take control of the Senate because of this clown or the wing nut in Nevada, the only good that might come from it is that it might discourage voters from supporting these types of candidates in the future.

I'll tell you one thing, if we do manage to take the Senate, with some of the candidates we're fielding, the freshman Republican Senate class will be quite an...how shall I put this...eclectic....bunch....

I imagine we'll hear a number of highly humorous and entertaining pronouncements issuing from the floor of The World's Greatest Deliberative Body....

I certainly won't envy Mitch McConnel his task trying to keep this group in line and preventing them saying embarassing things...

He better get himself some big bottles of Pepto Bismol and Extra Strength Excedrin....(He might want to keep a big bottle of scotch around as well.)

Be careful what you wish for.

I can recall any number of Democratic friends rubbing their hands with glee when GWB got the Republican nomination in 2000. Never underestimate the stupidity of the electorate.

Gee, that was an odd reaction...I guess they hadn't been following the race very closely, because Bush consistently led Gore in the polls, frequently by double digits....

I remember in 76' the the Carter people were doing high fives over the prospect of that "right wing extremist" Ronald Reagan getting nominated...they thought they had dodged a bullet....I remember one poll in early '76 where He was beating Reagan 60% to 26%....

But in the end, the good sense of the American people won out and TIC got exactly what he deserved....

Before the nominations? I seem to recall that McCain posed a greater threat than GWB, but I could be misremembering. I guess my memory could be tainted by my incredulity that any person considering themselves even marginally ethical could have stooped to vote for a candidate whose campaign team accused McCain of fathering an illegitimate black child.

I take it that comment was rather "tongue in cheek" Jim? What passes for debate in your senate wouldn't pass muster on a parish council .

Well now!
Insurgent US "Tea Party" conservatives scored another big upset victory on Tuesday, as a political novice romped over a veteran lawmaker to become the Republican champion in the fight for Vice President Joe Biden's old senate seat.

With 99 per cent of precincts reporting, unofficial results showed Christine O'Donnell beating popular moderate Representative Mike Castle by a 53.1-46.9 per cent margin and US media called the race for the relative unknown.

O'Donnell, who has survived charges of past financial improprieties, harnessed anti-establishment anger and rode an endorsement from former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin to a stunning victory.

Despite the Tea Party exuberance, the results handed Democrats a lifeline in their uphill struggle to hold Biden's seat, amid deep voter anger at the sour economy and unemployment near 10 per cent.

Recent opinion polls showed Castle was expected to cruise to victory over Democratic county executive Chris Coons, who leads O'Donnell amid establishment Republican predictions that she cannot win in November.

Well, I've said it before, but now it's conclusive: The insane wingnut faction is dressed in a suicide vest and has barricaded itself inside the GOP with 4 tons of C4.

Jim, in true Frankensteinian (Frankenstinian?) fashion your party created a monster that has come back to kill its creator. It is now no longer a convenient tool for Republican pandering to the retarded racist xenophobe "base;" it is now the blood-thirsty bootlicking zombie servant of the Scaife-Koch-Olin cabal and corporate masters of the pharma, insurance and petrochemical industries, who are only too happy to piss all over the teabaggers and tell them it's just trickle-down economics.

I swear, I have never seen so much concentrated idiocy and fundamental lack of comprehension on public display. Stupid should be painful, so that there might be less of it.

I find the Delaware results particularly depressing...

Unlike some other states where a bunch of know-nothings got candidates nominated that turned sure wins into toss ups, which is bad enough, (like Nevada, Kentucky and Alaska) in this case, these morons managed to turn a sure win into a sure loss...

What good will it do us if we manage to pull off wins in unlikely places like California, Wisconsin, and Connecticut, if at the same time we're pissing away dead certs in Delaware, Nevada and Kentucky?

I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't some secret connection between the backers of these candidates and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, since they are clearly the greatest beneficiaries.... :(

It wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility.

Fer Crissakes, "the backers of these candidates" are Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, the Tea Party Express, Americans for Prosperity, FreedomWorks, the Koch brothers, Richard Mellon Scaife and Dick Armey.
