Paddy goes for a job as a lumberjack:

Interviewer: Tell me Paddy, where have you worked previously?
Paddy: I was cutting down trees in the Sahara Forest.
Interviewer: You mean the Sahara Desert?
Paddy: Well that's what it's called now...
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

So this man was stumbling through the Sahara when he came upon a cricket ball. "Odd" he thought and stumbled on. About a mile further along he found another cricket ball. "Blood odd" he thought but he continued walking. After another mile he found a castrated cricket.

Regarding my original post, I revoke it.

I heard Josh Groban was being cast as "Porgy."

Just kidding.

I think if you're producing a dramatic work about actual historical (or living) figures, whose physical appearance is well known, (None of which applies to a musical featuring all fictional characters like The Sound Of Music) you would want to cast actors who look like those real people.

And race maybe a legitimate consideration in that, but so are a lot of other factors...

So no, you wouldn't cast Wesley Snipes to play George Washington....

But you wouldn't cast George Costanza either...

all fictional characters like The Sound Of Music

ummm, LJ, they were real people (not particularly realistically portrayed, but...)

Fictional/historical is certainly part of it, but not all. You're going to look pretty stupid trying to do Gone with the Wind with an all black cast, or A Raisin in the Sun with all white one, but somehow I don't think that most people would be completely incredulous when faced with a black nun. There are some exceptions of course, who barely qualify to be called people, but...

How about a remake of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner starring Tom Hanks in Sidney Potier's role?

No, I don't see that working... :?

Or Christian Bale playing Virgil Tibbs in a remake of They Call Me Mr. Tibbs...

but somehow I don't think that most people would be completely incredulous when faced with a black nun.
Especially in a Broadway musical stage re-make, where the "black nun" has won 5 Tonys....

What if Spenser Tracy, Katharine Hepburn and Katharine Houghton were replaced by Denzel Washington, Vanessa Williams and Jennifer Hudson?

We all know what happens when you change black actors for white...

Nothing against the other actors and actresses, but you can't replace Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn any where any time...

Any more than you could replace Bogie and Bergman...

..

To me history in a period piece is important both back ground and events and it does not matter if it is a musical, a book or whatever. To some people it is not important; to some people the truth depends on what they want to believe.
I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

If you can show me where I am wrong I will accept it. The truth is what it is.

That's right lib. That's why you believe that Canada was a Soviet ally and Europeans don't eat corn.

Don't be silly Jim! Everybody knows that the remake of Casablanca starring Myra Dinglebat and Peter Beardsley was definitive...
