A Rave For The Sleep Number Bed

Post by Lord Jim »

When we got married we bought a mattress for about $1200, which I thought was an outrageous price for something like a mattress, I'd always bought mattresses for my California King-sized bed used, and never spent more than a couple of hundred dollars...

[Of course before I got married my idea of "separating laundry" was to put my clothes into two piles; (whatever I didn't send to the dry cleaners) those that didn't smell bad enough that they could be worn again, and those that were smelly enough to require washing...but I digress...]

And now with this mattress being 15 years old, and (having two kids use it as a trampoline) for the past six months we have been deciding on a new mattress...Lady Kelly wanted to get one with "memory foam"...

I'm not a big fan of "memory foam"...my experience in sleeping on that was that it was like sleeping on Play Dough; (the "memory" seems somewhat lacking, and when you roll over you're caught in the last "memory"... that style of mattress seems to have a bit of Alzheimers in its memory...)

Then last summer when we stayed at The Atlantis in Reno, we slept on a Sleep Number Bed and we agreed this was the answer to our dilemma...I like a firmer mattress, she likes one that's a little softer..the perfect solution...

So for Christmas this year, we decided to invest in one...(and I say "invest" because for a California King version with the bells and whistles we wanted on it, it was more than 3 grand...about six times what my first car cost...)

We had it delivered about a week ago....

I cannot begin to tell you the difference it has made...

I believed that all the back muscle aches, occasional spams and 'twinges" I was experiencing as I got moving in the morning were just a function of getting older...(what the hell difference could a friggin' mattress make?)

I couldn't have been more wrong...

Ever since we got this thing, all the morning back pains I took for granted have vanished...and I do wake up with a lot more energy...

I hate to sound like The Bionic Woman Lindsey Wagner's infomercial, but based on my personal experience what kind of mattress you sleep on does make a real difference...

Sounds interesting, I wonder if they sell them here.

LJ, I find it funny that people worry about how much a good mattress costs, as compared to say, a car. Most people spend 6 to 8 hours per day on the mattress, and less than 3 hours per day in the car. (Numbers may vary, but you get the gist.) I know where I'd focus my time and money shopping for! ;)

Maybe it was a knock off CP...

This is not an "air mattress" it's far firmer than that; and there's an underlying coil..

it might have been a fairly old model but I doubt it was a knock off. and the air mattress component just left me sinking in the middle.

Well, I just didn't understand or appreciate the value of it...

And I really didn't think it made any difference...

I'd slept on awful mattresses for years, without giving it a second thought...

It never occurred to me that something as simple as a mattress could make a real difference...

A good mattress is money well spent. Although I'm resisting the idea that they have to be replaced more often than cars.

I'm still looking for the equal of the twin size be I slept on during my teen years. I still have it to this day and I swear whenever the wife and I get into a good fight we each want to storm out first in order to get a night on that mattress.

Well CP, it sounds like you had a bad experience with it...

All I can tell you is that I've never felt better...

I own no stock in this company; I have no interest in telling this story, beyond relating my own personal experience to my long time forum friends...

Frankly, I was quite surprised to discover that something as simple as a "mattress" could make such a difference...

Yes, but back "in the day" you could have a lot more quality time in the car... ;)

Much quality time was spent in my old Plymouth Volare. It had a fine back seat! (So did the girls!) :nana

I think that Jim is right; getting a good night sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your health. I sleep on memory foam and it works well for me, but my wife has a select comfort and it works well too. What I really don‘t like is inter springs; might as well sleep on pile of nails. When I was in survival school I slept on pine bough, but I was a lot younger then; I think it would probably kill now. The older you get the more important sleep is.
Soon, I’ll post my farewell message. The end is starting to get close. There are many misconceptions about me, and before I go, to live with my ancestors on the steppes, I want to set the record straight.
