Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand...he's on the sauce. Again. What's yer poison this time, rube? Gin? Vodka? King Cobra? Listerine?

One thing I'll say for Jarl, you know what you're going to get. He only has one idea and that is what he'll post nearly every time.
You might die of boredom but you will never even get a paper cut worth of suspense when his index fingers are plodding across the keyboard.
His go-to line is alcohol so from that one might infer that alcohol has shaped his consciousness more than anything else.

Don't drink at all, never drank much, haven't had a drink in more than fifteen years. Anything else you want to be totally wrong about today, dumbass?

Did you not read the post you just quoted, did you read it and discover you could not comprehend it, or did you read and comprehend it and simply decide to just drool on the keyboard instead of posting at least an ATTEMPT at something intelligent?
Are you stoned, stupid, soused, or all three?

My guess is, rube's statement stands up to examination. (It could happen)
Jarl's
I understand this because my progression has shamefully gone like this:
Boxed wine
Adding ice cubes to boxed wine
Putting ice cubes and boxed wine into a plastic cup
Putting ice cubes and boxed "lo-alcohol, lo-kilojoules" wine into a plastic cup
From this to the gutter is not a long drop - it may even involve a short climb

Jarl's
So far every one of his posts directed at rubato has consisted of boring remarks involving alcohol so the tentative inference is not irrational.go-to line is alcohol so from that one might infer that alcohol has shaped his consciousness more than anything else.

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Re: Hell Freezes Over! -Flash-
I'm a smoker and CVS had the cheapest legal cigarettes. But I buy from the reservation which are around $3 pack as opposed to the $9 CVS sells.
(The reservation cigs are not name brands)
I do have to ask why CVS will still be selling all the prepackaged, obesety, diabetic inducing and alcoholic items? Chips, candy, cake, sugary sodas in multiple liter sizes, beer, malt liquor drinks, etc?
Or will they be next?

I do have to ask, why does someone have to be perfect (in your eyes) merely to be better?
And btw; None of those items, when used as intended, are inherently dangerous and cause disease. Addiction to cigarettes causes disease and death.

So does addiction to alcohol and eating large amounts of foods leading to obesity (perhaps not a physical addiction, but definitely a psychological one).

Re: Hell Freezes Over! -Flash-
I wonder what the retail margin is on cigarettes. If CVS is like most retailers, they have a few products on which they make a ton of money, some that they sell as "loss leaders," and others that they carry just as an accommodation to customers, and break even on. With the horrific taxes on cigs, my guess is that this won't cost them anything in lost profits.
The more time goes by, the more puzzling it is that anyone would maintain that particular foul habit. Glad I never got started.

None of those things are nearly as addicting as cigarettes. Use of alcohol does not inherently lead to addiction. Use of cigarettes does. Use of junk food does not inherently lead to addiction. &c.Big RR wrote:Addiction to cigarettes causes disease and death.

Please, while cigarettes may well be more addictive than alcohol, not every person who smokes them becomes addictive. Many do, but there are a good number of people who do not.Use of alcohol does not inherently lead to addiction. Use of cigarettes does.

Plenty of people are addicted to eating. There is an Overeaters Anonymous fellowship.
That has to be hard on those people. At least one doesn't need alcohol to live. Not so with food.
My counselor in outpatient was in the OA fellowship. Good looking lady.

Re: Hell Freezes Over! -Flash-
oldr--I think it depends on what you mean by addiction; with tobacco and alcohol there is a recognized chemical dependence that occurs in some portion of the persons who smoke or drink. This chemical dependence is understood to produce the physical withdrawal symptoms experienced by those stopping the activity. I am not aware that food has any such chemical dependence, but it clearly does produce a psychological dependence in some who compulsively overeat. Still a difficult habit to kick, but for different reasons.
Re: Hell Freezes Over! -Flash-
"A good number" in this case is a small percentage. And smoking is inherently harmful. Sugar &c in small amounts is not.Big RR wrote:Please, while cigarettes may well be more addictive than alcohol, not every person who smokes them becomes addictive. Re: Hell Freezes Over! -Flash-
The majority of people in this country don't smoke cigarettes. Most of them have probably either smoked or breathed in second-hand smoke and decided not to become smokers.
The majority of people exposed to cigarette smoke do not become addicted.
In regards to alcoholic beverages, there are drinkers who are responsible for killing a lot of other people while under the influence. If CVS wants to look concerned for people's health, they wouldn't sell alcohol or cigarettes.

Re: Hell Freezes Over! -Flash-
This has absolutely positively nothing to do with concern for anyone's health...
This is all about getting some free publicity, and winning approval from the pc seals, (the seals of approval, as it were) who mindlessly bark and slap their flippers together every time something is done to punish or make the lives of those who engage in an activity that they don't approve of more difficult....
Nothing makes that crowd happier than a swift kick to the balls being delivered to anyone who chooses to engage in any behavior or make any choice they don't approve of...
They are the flip side of the coin with the right wingers who wanted to dictate what people can do in their bedrooms, or whether or not contraception should be available. Their ideologies and agendas maybe different, but their control freak sense of entitlement to dictate how others should live mindsets are identical. They simply cannot resist the impulse to meddle. They have way more in common with each other then either would care to admit...

or
480,000 / 42,100,000 = 0.0114 Smoking risk factor
88,000 / 167,500,000 = 0.00053 Drinking risk factor
Another way to view it is that smoking kills 1.1 percent of it's participants per year while drinking kills only 0.053 percent.
Or a smoking risk factor which is almost 22 TIMES greater.
More than enough to justify a significantly different treatment of access to alcohol

http://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/fact-sheets/alcohol-use.htmCigarettes and Death
Cigarette smoking causes about one of every five deaths in the United States each year.1,6 Cigarette smoking is estimated to cause the following:1
More than 480,000 deaths annually (including deaths from secondhand smoke)
278,544 deaths annually among men (including deaths from secondhand smoke)
201,773 deaths annually among women (including deaths from secondhand smoke)
Alcohol Use and Health
There are approximately 88,000 deaths attributable to excessive alcohol use each year in the United States.1 This makes excessive alcohol use the 3r d leading lifestyle-related cause of death for the nation.2 Excessive alcohol use is responsible for 2.5 million years of potential life lost (YPLL) annually, or an average of about 30 years of potential life lost for each death.1 In 2006, there were more than 1.2 million emergency room visits and 2.7 million physician office visits due to excessive drinking.3 The economic costs of excessive alcohol consumption in 2006 were estimated at $223.5 billion.3

So for a first-pass estimate of the risk factor it would be:Overview
An estimated 42.1 million people, or 18.1% of all adults (aged 18 years or older), in the United States smoke cigarettes.1 Cigarette smoking is more common among men (20.5%) than women (15.8%).1
