Trial: E-nagging can increase healthy activity
Victoria Colliver, Chronicle Staff Writer
Published 4:00 am, Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Kaiser Permanente researchers conducting a clinical trial on the impact of e-mailed reminders on diet and physical activity found gentle electronic nagging actually worked: People who received regular messages suggesting modest lifestyle improvements increased their activity level and made healthier food choices.

The study, conducted in 2006 and published today in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, is considered the first randomized, controlled study to look at the effect of e-mail on health.

The results showed trial participants who received regular e-mails recommending small health goals - such as a 10-minute walk - increased activity by 55 minutes per week and decreased sedentary activity by two hours a week, as compared with those who only received one message at the onset of the study.

The 16-week trial involved 787 Northern California Kaiser employees in administrative or technical positions.

"The takeaway message here for people who want to improve their diet and physical activity, and for employers who want a healthier workforce, is that e-mail intervention programs are a very cost-effective way to get healthy,"
said Barbara Sternfeld, senior research scientist for Kaiser's Division of Research and lead investigator for the study.

The e-mail program, developed by a Berkeley company called NutritionQuest, tailored the messages to personal goals and the individual's lifestyle and schedule based on participants' answers to a questionnaire.

The great thing about this kind of experiment is that the data, at least in summary form, is available to the general public. And if you have more questions you know where to go to get them answered

And that is game, set, and match.

Well, 'fraid not....

It doesn't say but it's pretty obvious that these findings are based on self reporting, (so the language should have said things like "employees report" not stating the results as fact; that's problem one.) since obviously no one is actually out checking how many times the participants go for walks, or following them at the grocery store.

Really? Not from where I sit....
Kaiser Permanente researchers conducting a clinical trial...

The 16-week trial involved 787 Northern California Kaiser employees in administrative or technical positions.
Here's the conclusion that looks valid to me:

There is a single unreplicated study which shows that better educated employees of a healthcare company, when asked by their employer whether or not a procedure their employer is carrying out is effective, report that it is....

Not exactly earth shattering news...

And then there's this:
The e-mail program, developed by a Berkeley company called NutritionQuest, tailored the messages to personal goals and the individual's lifestyle and schedule based on participants' answers to a questionnaire.
So in other words, these people were getting emails tailored to specific goals that they were already interested in accomplishing, so the messages reminded them to do things they were already committed to doing; a far cry from the generic messages sent out to anyone who just happened to sign up, and in no way analogous.

You really should read the articles you post more closely and thoughtfully before you post them. That will help you avoid unwarranted boasts.

Yep, even testier...

Game, Set, Match, and slam-dunk!
And delusional as well....

In fact he's so frothing with frustrated rage at finding his derriere in his hands yet again, that he's even talking to himself:

The study showed that people who were regularly reminded to be active were slightly more active than people who weren't regularly reminded to be active.

I bet nobody saw that coming....

On the one hand we have the Kaiser-Permanente Health Plan and the Journal of Preventive Medicine. On the other we have, you, a.k.a. bullshit.

Tough call.

Anyone here think LJ knows something about epidemiology? Anyone? Anyone here think that LJ knows something about doing research in health care? Anyone?

No?

Anyone here think LJ blah, blah, sputter, drool, sputter some more...
What I can do is think critically, understand the meaning and implications of the words I read, and process the information appropriately...

Which gives me a big leg up on you, Peaches...

What rube is doing now is trying to make me as pissed off as he is at being caught sans trousers twice back to back in two threads on the same day...

But all he's succeeding in doing is amusing me while he digs himself an even deeper hole...

Please show me where I ridiculed the original proposal in the OP.

So now you agree that they were right? Well, good. You can learn. A surprise, but a beneficial one.

So it is only LJ who is fighting against the facts again.

That's not what I wrote, Einstein. I asked you to show me where I ridiculed the proposal in the OP. If you could absorb what you read you might notice that I haven't commented on the OP.

Think about it.

Nevermind... too much to ask.

I do have to agree that the conclusion drawn here is a little "suspect".

As LJ pointed out, these bits of info taken together:
Kaiser Permanente researchers conducting a clinical trial on the impact of e-mailed reminders on diet and physical activity.....
The 16-week trial involved 787 Northern California Kaiser employees in administrative or technical positions. ........
.....tailored the messages to personal goals and the individual's lifestyle and schedule based on participants' answers to a questionnaire.
A company did it's own research on it's own employees and the messages were taylored for each employees goal/lifestyle/schedule and they got an "OK" result.

One can do the same for themselves with their smartphone and a reminder app.
